Chapter 5 - Setting the Record Straight

As the heavy boarding door finally slid shut and the automated locking mechanism engaged with a satisfying, heavy thud, a profound silence settled over Flight 212.
Captain Elizabeth Hart lingered by Row 2, her posture stiff with lingering anxiety. She looked down at Zara, who had calmly settled into Seat 2A, stowing her red bag beneath the seat in front of her and fastening her seatbelt with practiced ease.
“Miss Coleman,” Elizabeth began, her voice softening into a mix of deep apology and nervous respect. “I sincerely apologize for how that situation was handled initially. Protocol dictated that I verify—”
“You followed procedure up until the gate, Captain,” Zara interrupted politely, offering a reassuring smile that instantly eased the tension in the older woman’s shoulders. “My father always says that safety protocols are non-negotiable, and you were right to check the manifest carefully. But rudeness shouldn’t be part of anyone's uniform.”
Elizabeth let out a long, shaky breath and smiled back. “Your father is a very wise man. If there is anything you need during the flight—extra service, private adjustments—please just let me know.”
“Thank you, Captain, but I just want a quiet flight to London,” Zara replied, pulling a hardcover book from her bag.
Across the aisle, the businessman who had previously hidden his smile leaned over slightly. “Excuse me, young lady,” he said, tipping his coffee cup in a silent toast. “That was quite possibly the most masterclass handling of an inflated ego I have ever witnessed in thirty years of business travel. If you ever need a corporate lawyer, my card is yours.”
Zara laughed softly, thanking him before opening her book.

Up in the cockpit, Elizabeth settled back into her seat, radioing ground control for immediate pushback clearance. The delay caused by Richard Bennett’s arrogance had cost them precisely twelve minutes, but air traffic control, alerted to the VIP status of the front cabin passenger, cleared Flight 212 for an expedited taxiway route straight to the active international runway.
The massive engines whined to life, sending a gentle, comforting vibration through the airframe as the aircraft began its slow, majestic push away from the gate. Zara rested her head against the cool window glass, watching the terminal lights recede into the distance, entirely unaware that the turbulence of her journey was only just beginning.
