Chapter 8 - Reclaiming Our Lives

With the legal battles behind us, my mother and I turned our focus toward building our new life.

We decided to sell the house in San Jose—too many ghosts lingered in those hallways—and purchased a charming, sunlit Victorian home in Carmel-by-the-Sea. It had a gorgeous wraparound porch, a sprawling garden filled with lavender and hydrangeas, and a dedicated studio space for my mother to revive her bespoke artisan tailoring business.

Mom’s hair had begun to grow back. While it was still short compared to her legendary waist-length braid, it formed soft, silver-streaked waves around her face, framing her warm, peaceful smile. She no longer hid under wide-brimmed hats; she walked through the farmers' market with her head held high, radiating a quiet, dignified grace that commanded respect wherever she went.

My pregnancy progressed wonderfully. By late autumn, my baby bump was clearly visible, and the nursery we prepared was a sanctuary of soft pastels, handmade quilts stitched by my mother, and shelves lined with classic children's books.

People often asked if I felt bitter about what had happened. My answer was always the same: I lost a wedding, but I saved my life. If Brandon hadn't shown his true colors on that fateful morning, I might have spent the rest of my existence bound to a man who viewed my family as inferior and my loyalty as disposable. His cruelty was the catalyst that set me free.
