Chapter 6 - The Counter-Offensive

By late summer, the legal battle reached its climax.

Victoria called me into her downtown San Jose office to review the final settlement proposal. As I sat across from her mahogany desk, she slid a thick leather-bound folder across the glass surface.

“They caved completely, Naomi,” Victoria announced with a triumphant grin. “Brandon and his associates realized that fighting this in open court would guarantee a prison sentence for corporate fraud and embezzlement.”

I opened the folder and reviewed the terms:

Full Financial Restitution: All funds Brandon and Brianna misappropriated from our joint wedding and personal accounts—totaling over three hundred thousand dollars—were returned in full, plus statutory damages and legal fees.

Asset Transfer: The downtown condo purchased with commingled funds was legally signed over entirely to me as compensation for emotional distress and fraud.

Permanent Restraining Orders: Strict, enforceable restraining orders prohibiting Brandon, Brianna, and Waylon from coming within five hundred yards of my mother, my home, or me.

Public Retraction: A signed, notarized confession from Brianna admitting that the hair-mutilation incident was a deliberate act of sabotage orchestrated with Brandon’s knowledge.

“And what about Brandon?” I asked, turning the page.

“He’s bankrupt,” Victoria replied simply. “Arthur Pendelton blackballed him from the tech sector across the entire West Coast. His family has disowned him because his father’s firm took a reputational hit from his association with the scandal. He’s currently living out of a cheap motel in Oakland, trying to find entry-level work.”

I felt no pity—only a profound, liberating sense of closure. The man who had once looked down on my mother and me with arrogant condescension had been entirely dismantled by his own arrogance and greed.

“Let’s sign it, Victoria,” I said, picking up the pen. “Let’s put an end to this chapter once and for all.”
