Chapter 6 - The Confession in the Dark

The silence in the archive room became suffocating.

Cassius lowered the gun by a fraction of an inch, his mind racing as he pieced together the impossible puzzle standing right in front of him. The fighting skills, the tactical composure, the lack of fear, and now the deep, dark obsession with a decade-old corporate massacre.

"You're not just some random waitress," Cassius said, his voice dropping its sarcastic edge, replaced by dangerous realization. "You're Aria Sterling."

"My legal papers say otherwise, but my history doesn't," she replied coldly, her hand sliding into her pocket to keep a firm grip on the downloaded data drive. "Your syndicate didn't pull the trigger back then, Cassius. But your predecessor—the man who taught you everything you know—laundered the stolen assets through these exact accounts to build the empire you're sitting on today."

Cassius stared at her, watching the fierce, unyielding fury burning in her eyes. For a man who lived by violence and betrayal, he expected her to pull a weapon, to scream, or to try to kill him on the spot.

Instead, a strange, grim expression washed over his scarred face. He slowly lowered the pistol completely and clicked the safety back on.

"If I wanted you dead, you would have died the night you walked into the Foundry," Cassius said softly, stepping closer to her. "And if I wanted those files hidden, I wouldn't have left the master encryption key on a standard network."

She frowned, suspicion flashing across her features. "What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about the fact that my predecessor was a paranoid bastard who tried to betray me, too," Cassius said, his voice hardening. "I didn't destroy the Sterling family, Aria. But I spent the last five years quietly hunting down every single person who did. I just didn't have the final encryption key to prove it. Which, conveniently, you just downloaded for me."

She looked at him, searching his face for any sign of deception. The tension between them was thick enough to cut with a knife—a delicate balance between two apex predators holding loaded weapons in the dark.

"If you're telling the truth," she murmured, "then we have a mutual enemy."

"We do," Cassius agreed, reaching out and gently taking the micro-drive from her unresisting fingers. He pocketed it, then looked down into her eyes with an intense, undeniable heat. "So here is my counteroffer, Aria. Instead of trying to assassinate me in my own archive room... how about we finish the wedding tomorrow, and burn the rest of them to the ground together?"
