Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

Two days later, the Calder estate was bathed in the warm, golden light of an autumn morning. The heavy security patrols had been scaled back, replaced by a genuine sense of peace.

Clare packed a small leather bag in the staff quarters, preparing for a new chapter of her life. An independent trust had been established in her and Maisie's name, financed by the seized assets of Marcus Vance. She could finally leave housekeeping behind, buy a home of her own, and give her daughter the future Julian had always dreamed of.

There was a soft knock on her open door.

Victor stood in the hallway. He wasn't wearing his usual tailored suit; he looked older, yet remarkably lighter, as if a decades-old anchor had finally been cut loose.

"You're leaving," Victor noted, looking at the bag.

"We have a train to catch," Clare replied softly, turning to face him. "Thank you, Mr. Calder. For everything. For the truth."

Victor stepped into the room, hesitating for a moment before speaking. "The estate is large, Clare. Too large for one man. And... Maisie still hasn't finished her count."

Clare smiled faintly, a genuine, beautiful expression that transformed her face. "She's very stubborn about finishing what she starts."
