Chapter 2 - Echoes in the Corridor

As the minutes passed in absolute silence, Victor found himself actually counting. One Mississippi. Two Mississippi. Each second felt heavier than the last, stripping away decades of calculated ruthlessness, betrayal, and isolation. When the five minutes finally elapsed, Maisie simply patted his sleeve, muttered a soft thank-you, and allowed her mother to lead her away.
Clare Nolan’s hands shook as she closed the door to the employee quarters. She had spent the last two years hiding in plain sight, mourning a husband who had been erased by the very syndicate Victor commanded. Julian Nolan had been a low-level accountant who stumbled upon money laundering records and paid with his life. Clare had taken the housekeeping job simply to stay close enough to find answers, never expecting her daughter to breach the lion's den.
Back in the breakfast room, Victor remained seated long after his men returned. Vincent Hale, his loyal security chief, noticed the subtle change in his boss's posture.
"Is there a problem with the staff, sir?" Vincent asked carefully.

Vincent’s eyes narrowed slightly. Julian Nolan was a closed case from years ago—a ghost who had allegedly fled with stolen syndicate funds. Digging into it meant opening old wounds and potentially exposing enemies within their own ranks. Yet, Victor's command was absolute.
