Chapter 3 - Unearthing the Ghost

By midnight, Victor’s private study was lit only by the amber glow of a desk lamp. Spread across the mahogany surface were confidential dossiers that Vincent had retrieved from deep storage.
The official story was neat and tidy: Julian Nolan had embezzled funds from a subsidiary shell company and vanished before justice could catch up. But as Victor read through the financial tracking logs, glaring discrepancies emerged. The signatures authorizing the transfers were forged. The routing numbers pointed directly to accounts controlled by Marcus Vance, Victor’s ambitious underboss who had been aggressively expanding his own power base.
Julian hadn't stolen a dime. He had discovered that Marcus was skimming from the syndicate and framing him to cover his tracks.

Victor leaned back, staring into the shadows. For years, he had prided himself on maintaining absolute order and loyalty. If Marcus had betrayed him once, he was likely doing it still. But more importantly, Victor realized that an innocent man had been executed under his tacit approval, leaving behind a grieving widow and a little girl who counted to three hundred to heal a broken heart.
The next morning, Victor did not go to the boardroom. Instead, he walked down to the lower service levels, seeking out the quiet corner where Clare Nolan worked.
