Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING IN ROOM 412

Dario was awake.

He was sitting slightly elevated in the hospital bed, his gray-blue eyes clear, fierce, and focused despite the pale exhaustion carved into his face. An IV line ran into his left wrist, but his right hand was resting on the bedside table, holding a small brass key.

When he saw me, a profound, shuddering breath escaped his chest.

“Elena,” he rasped, his voice stronger than yesterday.

I abandoned the trash cart and stepped directly to his bedside. Up close, I could see the brutal surgical scar hidden along his hairline from the attack in the garage.

“Dario,” I whispered. “I have it.”

I pulled the black USB drive from my pocket and laid it in his palm.

His fingers closed around it instantly. He closed his eyes for two seconds, a look of profound relief washing over his features.

“Sofia... did she suffer?” he asked, his voice cracking with seven years of unexpressed grief.

“No,” I lied gently, wanting to give him peace. “She passed away peacefully. But she left you a daughter, Dario. Her name is Lucia. The girl who sang to you yesterday... that was your child.”

Tears welled in Dario’s gray eyes, slipping down his weathered cheeks into his dark beard. “I knew it,” he whispered, his chest heaving. “The moment she held my hand... I felt Sofia’s heartbeat in her.”

The door handle rattled loudly.

“Dario,” I said quickly. “Vincent is outside. He has court papers to move you in ten minutes.”

Dario’s face hardened instantly into cold steel. The vulnerable father vanished, replaced by the formidable head of the Kane enterprise.

“Plug the drive into the hospital terminal,” Dario commanded softly, pointing to the wall-mounted diagnostic computer beside his bed.

“What?”

“The terminal is connected to the hospital’s secure fiber network,” Dario said, his eyes burning with intense calculation. “That drive doesn't just contain financial ledgers, Elena. It contains the encryption codes to Vincent’s offshore accounts and the recorded conversations between Vincent and the cartel officers who arranged the hit on Sofia seven years ago.”

My breath caught. “Sofia recorded them?”

“Sofia was smarter than all of us,” Dario said with a fierce, proud smile. “Plug it in. Marco is waiting on the network from the security office on the second floor.”

I rushed to the terminal, inserted the black drive into the USB port, and entered the six-digit access code Dario dictated to me.

The screen flashed red, then green. A progress bar began uploading files: 10%... 35%... 70%... 100%.

At that exact second, the door of Room 412 was thrown open with violent force.
