Chapter 10 - THE SUNSHINE WE BUILT

Three years later.

The morning sun washed over the grounds of a stunning coastal estate overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in Rhode Island.

The dark legacy of Kane Maritime had been completely dismantled. Under Dario’s leadership, the legitimate shipping assets had been restructured into a global clean-energy transport firm, while all illicit operations were turned over to federal authorities. Vincent was serving a life sentence in a federal maximum-security prison.

On the wide, green lawn overlooking the ocean, nine-year-old Lucia was running with a golden retriever puppy, her laughter floating over the sound of the crashing waves.

On the stone patio, I stood holding a warm cup of coffee, watching her.

Two warm, strong arms wrapped around my waist from behind, and Dario pulled me back against his broad chest. He looked healthier, stronger, his dark hair tied back, the old tension gone from his face.

“What are you thinking about?” Dario whispered into my hair, pressing a gentle kiss to my temple.

“I was thinking about Room 412,” I admitted softly, turning in his arms to look up into his gray-blue eyes. “About how terrified I was when you woke up.”

Dario smiled warmly, bringing his hand up to cup my cheek. “You were the bravest woman in that hospital, Elena. You protected my daughter when I couldn't. You gave me a second chance at life.”

He leaned down and kissed me softly—a deep, peaceful kiss that carried all the gratitude, love, and healing we had built together over the last three years.

“Mama! Daddy! Look!” Lucia called out, running up the stone steps of the patio.

She held a small wooden box she had decorated with glitter and paint. Inside was a framed photograph of Sofia from seven years ago, surrounded by fresh white sea lavender.

“I put Auntie Sofia’s picture in the garden box like you showed me,” Lucia said proudly, looking up at both of us.

Dario knelt down beside Lucia, pulling her into a tight, warm embrace, looking at the photograph of the girl who had started our journey to the truth.

“She would be so proud of you, Lucia,” Dario said softly, his voice thick with emotion.

Lucia leaned her head against Dario’s shoulder and began softly hum-singing:

“You are my sunshine, my only sunshine...”

May you like

Dario looked up at me, taking my hand in his, pulling me down to join them.

The sun broke fully over the horizon, painting the sea and sky in brilliant gold, casting out every remaining shadow of the past, leaving only the warmth of the family we had fought so hard to save.
