Chapter 6 - THE FOURTH FLOOR SIEGE

At 6:30 AM, St. Adrian’s Private Hospital was bathed in the pale gray light of early dawn.

I entered through the basement service doors wearing my Environmental Services uniform, pushing a large yellow trash cart lined with heavy plastic bags. Lucia was tucked safely in the rear breakroom of the pediatric wing on the second floor, guarded by an elderly nurse who had known my mother.

When the elevator opened on the fourth floor, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.

Four heavy security guards in dark suits stood outside Room 412. None of them were Marco’s men. These were Vincent Kane’s personal enforcement team.

Vincent Kane himself stood near the nurse’s station, speaking in hushed, sharp tones to Dr. Whitmore. Vincent was forty-five, lean, with silvering hair and the cold, predatory eyes of a hawk. He was wearing an Italian wool suit that cost more than I made in a year.

“Doctor,” Vincent was saying, his voice smooth as oil. “My brother’s brief moment of consciousness yesterday was merely a involuntary neurological spike. The family has decided to transfer him to our private clinic in Westchester where he can receive... peaceful care.”

“Mr. Kane,” Dr. Whitmore protested weakly. “Your brother showed clear cognitive awareness. He spoke a name.”

“He was delusional!” Vincent snapped, dropping the smooth facade for a fraction of a second. “The transfer happens at 7:00 AM. Have his charts ready.”

I kept my head down, pushing my yellow trash cart past the security guards toward Room 412.

“Hey!” one of Vincent’s guards barked, stepping into my path. “No cleaning until the patient is moved.”

I didn't argue. I looked up, letting him see my bleach-stained tunic and tired eyes.

“Head nurse sent me to clear the biohazard linens before the transport team arrives,” I said in a flat, monotone voice I had practiced for two years. “If they aren't cleared, the transport team will refuse to move the bed.”

The guard grimaced, looking at the heavy plastic bags in my cart. “Make it fast.”

He opened the door of Room 412 and shoved me inside, letting the heavy door click shut behind me.
