Chapter 7 - The Arraignment Hearing

The courtroom was packed to capacity. Reporters from regional and national networks crowded the press benches, cameras clicking furiously as the bailiff called the court to order.
Judge Arthur Sterling—no relation, thankfully—sat on the high bench, his expression grave as he reviewed the extensive docket.
Richard and Eleanor sat at the defense table. Gone were the tailored suits and proud postures. Richard looked hollowed out, his shirt slightly wrinkled, refusing to meet my eyes from across the aisle. Eleanor sat stiffly, her face pale, her hands tightly clasped in her lap, radiating pure, unadulterated fury.
"We are here for the formal arraignment in the matter of The State versus Richard and Eleanor Sterling," Judge Sterling announced, adjusting his glasses. "The charges include felony aggravated domestic assault, conspiracy to commit violent bodily harm, and unlawful restraint resulting in endangerment of a minor."
Defense counsel—a high-priced attorney flown in from the capital—immediately rose. "Your Honor, we enter a plea of not guilty on all counts. Furthermore, we move to suppress the audio evidence submitted by the prosecution on the grounds of chain-of-custody discrepancies and potential acoustic alteration."
Sarah Lin stood up smoothly, buttoning her blazer. "Your Honor, the prosecution objects. The audio file was transferred directly from the federal dashcam unit of witness Marcus Jenkins, verified by independent digital forensics, and corroborated entirely by the comprehensive medical trauma report filed by Dr. Hayes at St. Jude’s Hospital."
Sarah walked over to the multimedia screen in the center of the courtroom and pressed play.
The courtroom fell into a stunned, breathless silence as the audio began to play over the courtroom speakers.
“This is what happens to a wife who disrespects her husband.”“Stop fighting. Do what she says.”
Eleanor visibly winced in her chair. Richard buried his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking slightly under the crushing weight of public exposure and undeniable proof. Every single lie they had prepared to tell the jury evaporated in the span of twelve seconds.

Judge Sterling listened intently, his expression darkening with every second of audio. When the recording finished, the courtroom remained dead silent for five agonizing seconds.
"Motion to suppress is summarily denied," Judge Sterling stated firmly, his voice echoing off the oak-paneled walls. "The audio is authentic, clear, and admissible."
