Chapter 5 - Returning to the Scene of the Crime

The heavy iron gates of the estate swung open for me, this time under the supervision of two county deputies. Stepping out of the car, the morning sunlight caught the wooden bench near the garden—the very bench where my life had nearly been shattered.
The physical scars across my back and abdomen still throbbed with a dull, persistent ache, but walking back into that courtyard felt less like entering a prison and more like a victorious reclamation of territory.
Deputies swept the main house to ensure it was secure before letting me step inside. The interior was pristine, smelling of expensive potpourri and old leather—a veneer of upper-class civilization masking the rot underneath.
I headed straight for Richard’s private study. The mahogany double doors were locked, but Sarah had armed me with a court-ordered key. Inside, shelves lined with leather-bound financial ledgers and antique books stretched toward the high ceilings.
I sat down at Richard’s custom walnut desk and opened his laptop. Because we shared certain administrative household utilities, I knew his secondary password—a combination of his mother’s birthday and an old family motto.
The screen flickered to life.
I didn't just look for personal emails; I searched for financial transactions, hidden off-shore accounts, and communication logs between Richard and Eleanor detailing how they planned to systematically isolate me, gaslight me, and eventually strip away my legal rights if I ever attempted to leave.
Folder after folder opened up. There were text logs dating back months.“She’s getting too mouthy,” Eleanor had texted Richard three weeks ago. “A firm hand is the only way to remind her whose roof she’s under.”
Richard’s reply: “Mother, handle it however you see fit. Just make sure she doesn't ruin the upcoming charity gala appearance.”

I plugged my flash drive into the USB port and began downloading every single file, chat log, and ledger directly onto the drive. Nothing would be left to chance. Every piece of digital evidence would be handed over to the prosecution.
As I reached to eject the drive, a sharp knock echoed at the front door. My heart skipped a beat. Had someone managed to post bail already?
