Chapter 9 - The Promise of Family

My heart, which had been cold and hard for so many years, felt a deep, sudden warmth that made my breath catch in my throat.

I picked Emma up in my arms and walked across the street into the flower shop.

Sophia looked up from the counter, her eyes lighting up with a soft, radiant smile as she saw us enter together.

“Alessandro,” she said gently, wiping her hands on her apron. “You didn't have to come by today. I know how busy you are.”

“I’m never too busy for family, Sophia,” I replied, setting Emma down on a wooden stool near the counter.

Sophia blushed softly at the word family, her eyes dropping to the counter before meeting mine again.

“I received the legal papers from your attorney yesterday,” she said quietly. “The trust fund... the full ownership deed to the shop... Alessandro, it’s too much. I can never repay you for what you’ve done for us.”

“You don't owe me anything, Sophia,” I said, stepping closer to her behind the counter. “Your husband was a brave man who died fighting for the truth. And your daughter brought truth back into my life when I was surrounded by lies.”

I reached into my inner jacket pocket and pulled out a small velvet box, setting it gently on the counter between us.

Sophia stared at the box, her breath catching.

“What is this?” she whispered.

“Open it,” I murmured.

She opened the box with trembling fingers. Inside lay a delicate gold key stamped with the Moretti family seal—the key to the private estate gardens.

“I want you and Emma to move into the north wing of the estate,” I said, looking directly into her eyes with total honesty and vulnerability. “Not as guests. But as my family.”

Sophia looked up at me, tears of pure happiness shining in her eyes.

“Are you asking us to stay with you, Alessandro?” she whispered.

“I am asking you to let me protect you, cherish you, and give you the life you both deserve,” I answered softly.
