Chapter 8 - Above the Clouds

Moments later, the massive engines roared to life, a deep, vibration-filled surge of raw power that pressed us gently back into the leather cushions. The plane taxied smoothly down the runway, pausing for a brief, breathless heartbeat before accelerating with furious, beautiful speed.

Whoosh.

The wheels lifted off the tarmac, and gravity let go.

Lily pressed her face against the pristine window glass, her eyes reflecting the brilliant white of the clouds rushing past beneath us. The gray Tennessee storm clouds parted, revealing an endless ocean of golden afternoon sunlight stretching out to the horizon.

"Daddy! Look!" she cried out, pointing excitedly at the fluffy white mountains floating below us. "We're above the clouds! Just like you said!"

I slid my arm around her shoulders, pulling her close against my side. The pain in my lower back faded into the background, drowned out by the warmth of her laughter and the quiet peace settling deep into my chest.

From the overhead bin above us, the faded canvas bag rested silently, safely cradling Claire's final resting place.

I closed my eyes for a long moment, letting the hum of the jet engines wash over me. For two years, I had carried the crushing weight of grief, physical pain, and the terrifying responsibility of raising a motherless child alone. I had felt broken, discarded, and forgotten by a world that moved too fast for men with missing limbs and broken spines.

But sitting here in first class, holding my daughter's small hand while the sunlight poured through the window, I realized something vital. I hadn't broken. The road had been dark, brutal, and unforgiving, but we were still standing. We were still moving forward. And we were going to keep every promise we had ever made.
