Chapter 10 - The Promise Kept

The sun slipped entirely below the horizon, leaving behind a lingering twilight of deep indigo and soft gold. The boardwalk lights began to flicker on one by one, casting long, dancing shadows across the wooden planks.
We stayed there for a long time, just standing together at the edge of the world, listening to the eternal, comforting rhythm of the tide. My back ached, my prosthetic leg felt heavy, and the long road back home stretched out before us in the days ahead.

Lily watched the wind carry the ashes away, a serene, peaceful smile resting on her face. She leaned her head against my shoulder, her soft curls brushing against my cheek.
"We kept our promise, Daddy," she whispered.

I wrapped my arm around her, pulling my little girl close against my heart, and looked out across the dark, glittering expanse of the sea.
"We did, sweetheart," I murmured into the salt air. "We always do."
