Chapter 7 - Return to the Front

As I stood up, gripping my silver cane, the entire rear section of the airplane seemed to hold its breath.
"Come on, bug," I said to Lily, offering her my hand.
We walked back down the aisle—not with the hurried, humiliated shuffle of outcasts, but with dignity restored. This time, as we passed Row 25, Row 22, and Row 18, something extraordinary happened.
Passengers weren't staring away anymore. A middle-aged woman in Row 15 caught my eye and offered a gentle, tearful smile, nodding respectfully. A young man near the middle of the cabin cleared his throat and gave a subtle, respectful nod of his head. Word travels fast in the close confines of an airplane cabin, and the quiet injustice of our removal—and its swift, uncompromising reversal by the captain—had not gone unnoticed.
When we reached the front of the cabin, the scene in Row 2 was nothing short of breathtaking.
The expensive businessman—Mr. Sterling—was standing in the aisle, his face mottled with purple fury, gathering his leather garment bag while a flustered flight attendant held his briefcase.
"This is an absolute outrage!" Sterling snapped, glaring daggers at Captain Vance, who stood near the cockpit door with his arms crossed. "I am a diamond-tier executive! I will have your license suspended by the end of the day!"
"Have a wonderful flight, Mr. Sterling," Vance said smoothly, pointing toward the rear galley with a polite wave. "Economy seating is waiting for you in Row 29. Mind the lavatory door; it tends to stick."
Sterling let out an indignant huff, turned on his heel, and stomped angrily toward the back of the plane, muttering profanities under his breath.
Lily watched him go, her eyes wide, before looking up at me. "Is that man going to the dragon engines?"
I couldn't help it—a genuine, deep-bellied laugh broke out of my chest. "Something like that, bug."
"Welcome back to your seats, Mr. Hale, Miss Lily," Vance said, stepping forward to personally retrieve our faded canvas bag from the overhead bin and setting it down gently on the empty seat next to us. He crouched down beside Lily. "Take good care of your daddy on this flight, okay? He's a very brave man."
"I always do," Lily announced proudly, climbing back into Seat 2A and immediately retrieving Barnaby from his temporary exile.
Vance stood up, patted my shoulder firmly, and gave a sharp, respectful salute. "I'll see you on the ground in Charleston, Dan. Semper Fi."
May you like
"Semper Fi, Marcus," I replied, returning the salute with a steady hand.
The captain turned and walked back toward the flight deck, the heavy cockpit door sealing shut behind him with a solid, reassuring click.
