Chapter 3 - The Seven-Year Debt

"Get out of my diner, Damian," Elena choked out, pushing Maya behind her back as she stood between the child and the man she had once given her heart to.

Damian slowly rose to his feet. The unreadable mask had completely shattered, replaced by a raw, overwhelming agony.

"Seven years ago, you disappeared from my apartment overnight," Damian said, his voice thick with suppressed emotion. "You left your ring on the dresser. No note. No phone call. I thought you were dead, Elena. I spent three years tearing Boston apart looking for your body."

"I had to leave!" Elena hissed, stepping forward so her face was inches from his. "If I had stayed, your family would have killed me! Your father made it very clear what happens to a middle-class schoolteacher who gets in the way of the Vale bloodline!"

Damian’s jaw hardened. "My father died four years ago, Elena."

Elena blinked, the breath catching in her throat. "What?"

"He died of cancer," Damian said quietly. "And before he died, he confessed what he did to you. He confessed that he paid off your brother's debts and threatened to burn down your family home if you didn't disappear from my life."

Elena stared at him, the old wounds ripping open all over again. "He told me you agreed to it. He showed me documents... signed by you... offering me money to go away."

"It was a forgery!" Damian yelled, his voice echoing off the diner walls. He took a deep breath, instantly catching himself, lowering his tone to a fierce, desperate whisper. "I never signed anything. I would have given up every dime, every building, every piece of the Vale legacy just to wake up next to you one more morning."

Maya peeked out from behind her mother’s apron, holding her silver bracelet tight.

"Are you my daddy?" the little girl asked innocently.

The entire diner went dead quiet.

Damian looked down at Maya, his chest rising and falling heavily. He slowly knelt back down, bringing himself to eye level with his daughter.

"Yes, sweetheart," Damian said softly, a gentle, broken smile appearing on his face. "I am your daddy."
