Chapter 8 - A New Morning

Spring arrived in the Hamptons with a gentle warmth that washed away the memory of winter storms.
The lavender walls of the nursery had been repainted a soft, warm cream. The old canopy beds were replaced with cozy twin mahogany frames, and the shelf of stiff, expensive dolls was gone—replaced with colorful storybooks, finger paints, and handmade wooden toys.
In the gardens behind the estate, Lily and Rose were running through the green grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy Rory had brought home two weeks earlier.
Their laughter was clear, bright, and musical—a sound that filled the entire estate with genuine life.
Rory stood on the sunlit terrace, holding a cup of hot black coffee, watching his daughters play.
The dark circles beneath his eyes were gone. His face looked younger, rested, and at peace for the first time in years.
Veronica stepped out onto the terrace, carrying a tray of fresh lemonade and glass cups.
She wore a simple, elegant navy blue summer dress—no longer the uniform of a maid. Three months ago, Rory had officially appointed her as the Chief Administrator of the Starks Family Foundation, placing her in charge of the family’s philanthropic investments in pediatric healthcare and children's hospitals.
"They slept through the night again," Veronica smiled, setting the tray on the glass table. "Nine hours straight."
Rory turned to her, a genuine, warm smile touching his lips.
"They asked if you were going to read them the story about the little blue dragon tonight," Rory said gently.
"I promised them I would," Veronica replied, leaning against the terrace railing.
Rory walked over, standing beside her, looking out at his daughters playing in the sunlight.
"I spent twenty years believing that power was built on fear," Rory said softly, his voice full of quiet reflection. "I thought if men feared me enough, my family would be safe."
He turned his head, looking directly into Veronica’s warm brown eyes.
"You showed me that real protection doesn't come from guns or money, Veronica. It comes from paying attention to the people everyone else ignores."
May you like
Veronica smiled softly, a faint blush warming her cheeks. "I just listened to the children, Rory."
"And you saved my family," Rory said, taking her hand in his. His grip was strong, warm, and steady. "I can never repay that debt."
