Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Susan froze, her breath catching in her throat as she stared at Rory, then at the exposed electronics on the table.
"Rory... I... I heard a noise," Susan stammered, stepping back toward the door. "I came in to check on the girls—"
"Save your breath," Rory said calmly.
He reached down to his tablet, pressing play.
A small speaker on the wall played back the crystal-clear audio captured by the hidden wiretap in her guest room an hour earlier.
“Richard, it’s done,” Susan’s recorded voice echoed clearly through the room. “He’s completely broken. He’s going to sign the guardianship papers tomorrow afternoon. Once the girls are locked in Westchester, we’ll execute the power of attorney transfer on the real estate fund.”
Susan’s face turned gray. The lipstick on her trembling mouth looked suddenly garish against her pale skin.
"Rory... please," she whispered, her hands shaking as she backed into the doorframe. "Richard forced me! He said we were broke! He said your father left all the family assets to you and left Elena with nothing!"
"My sister was given thirty million dollars in a blind trust," Rory said, standing up slowly. He towered over her, his presence suffocating the small room. "You gambled it away in Monaco three years ago. I paid your debts twice, Susan."
"Rory..."
"You tortured my daughters," Rory growled, stepping into her space until she was backed flush against the door. "For eight weeks, you sat at my dinner table, held my hand, and watched two five-year-old babies scream until their ears bled."
He reached out, his large hand wrapping gently—almost terrifyingly—around her silk collar.
"Do you know what I do to people who cross me, Susan?" Rory whispered into her ear. "The men in the city think I am a monster. But for my daughters... I would burn the world to ashes."
The door behind her opened abruptly.
Frank and two armed guards grabbed Susan by her arms, dragging her out into the hallway as she began to sob hysterically.

"Where are you taking her?" Veronica asked softly, watching the panicked woman being hauled away.
"To meet her husband," Rory replied coldly. "Frank picked Richard up at his apartment twenty minutes ago."
