Chương 8 - Safehouse and Confessions

The battle lasted eight minutes.

When the final gunshot echoed away into the pine ridges and died, the gravel driveway was littered with brass casings, burning wreckage, and nine lifeless bodies.

Sergei Volkov lay pinned against the front wheel of his shattered SUV, his right leg shattered by a shotgun blast from Marco, blood bubbling from his lips.

Adrienne walked over slowly, his boots crunching on the frozen gravel. He looked down at the Russian mobster with eyes that held no anger, no triumph—only the cold, cosmic indifference of an executioner clearing away vermin.

"Who gave you the Pier 42 manifest coordinates?" Adrienne asked quietly.

Volkov coughed, spitting dark crimson onto the snow. He gave a wet, defiant grin. "Giancana... Chicago Outfit. He... he said you went soft. Said you were distracted... by a woman."

Adrienne tilted his head. "Giancana was mistaken."

Adrienne raised the Kimber.

*BANG.*

The gunshot cracked through the valley, and then there was only the sound of the wind through the pines and the crackle of burning rubber.

Adrienne lowered the weapon, turned to Marco, and handed him the empty magazine. "Clean this up. Call the coroner in Albany who’s on our payroll. Then call our team in Chicago. I want Giancana’s operations liquidated by sunrise."

"Consider it done," Marco said, wiping soot from his forehead. "Go get her."

Adrienne turned and walked back into the manor. His hands were coated in black powder residue, his knuckles scraped, his wool coat soaked with sleet and the dark spray of gunfire.

He descended the stone steps into the deep, arched cellar.

He reached the heavy titanium vault door, placed his thumb against the biometric scanner, and entered his private passkey.

The heavy hydraulic bolts slid back with a loud, mechanical hiss.

The door swung open.

Simone was standing in the center of the reinforced room, both hands wrapped around the Glock, the barrel trained dead center on the doorway. Her knuckles were white, her eyes wide with terror.

The moment she saw Adrienne, the gun dropped to her side.

"Adrienne," she sobbed.

She rushed forward, throwing her arms around his neck with such force that he stumbled back a half-step. She buried her face in his throat, breathing in the scent of his skin, oblivious to the cordite and the freezing cold radiating from his coat.

Adrienne wrapped his arms around her, burying his face in her soft curls, his entire body shuddering with a relief so intense it bordered on agony.

"It’s over," he murmured, his voice thick, kissing her temple, her cheek, her hair. "It’s over, Simone. You're safe. Volkov is dead. Giancana will be handled before morning. It’s over."

Simone pulled back slightly, her hands framing his soot-stained face, checking every inch of him. "Are you hurt? Tell me you're not shot."

"I’m fine," he breathed. "A few scratches. That’s all."

She looked at him—really looked at him—covered in the grime of a lethal firefight, the smell of gunpowder clinging to his clothes. For five years, this was the side of him she had kept compartmentalized behind corporate balance sheets and shipping schedules. The monster. The killer.

And yet, looking into his dark eyes, all she saw was the man who had torn up her resignation letter, who had confessed his love while trembling like a leaf, who had placed his body between her and an army of assassins.

"I’m not afraid of you," she whispered, her thumbs brushing the dark smudges from his cheekbones. "I never was."

Adrienne closed his eyes, leaning into her touch. "You should be. Look at what I brought to your doorstep."

"You didn't bring this to my doorstep," she said fiercely. "Greedy, pathetic men did. And you ended them. You protected me."

Adrienne opened his eyes, staring down at her with a raw, unvarnished devotion that made her knees feel weak.

"I want to protect you for the rest of my life," he said, his voice dropping into a register of solemn, absolute commitment. "Not as your boss. Not as the man who leaves appointments on your desk. As your partner. As your husband. If you will have me."

Simone’s breath hitched. A radiant, tearful smile broke across her face—the same smile he had seen in the penthouse ballroom, but this time, it was entirely, irrevocably his.

"You're proposing to me in a fallout shelter while covered in gunpowder, Adrienne Romano," she whispered, laughing through her tears.

"I’m an executive," he murmured, his lips brushing hers. "I don't waste time when the outcome is non-negotiable."

May you like

"Yes," she said against his mouth. "Yes, you idiot."
