Chương 7 - The Target on Her Back

The peace inside the stone manor lasted less than four hours.

At 2:15 AM, the red emergency klaxon in the estate’s tactical control room began to pulse with a silent, rhythmic strobe.

Adrienne was sitting at the massive oak dining table, his laptop open, his Kimber .45 resting beside his right hand. Simone was beside him, her head resting on his shoulder, her eyes half-closed in exhaustion.

The heavy oak door flew open. Marco stood there, clad in full tactical body armor, an MPX submachine gun slung across his chest.

"They're through the perimeter," Marco said, his voice flat with lethal focus. "South gate. Three black SUVs. They hit the sensor array with an EMP pulse and breached the gate before the security team could engage."

Simone sat bolt upright, the blanket sliding from her shoulders.

Adrienne didn't panic. He stood up, racked the slide of his Kimber with a clean, metallic clatter, and grabbed a radio from the sideboard.

"Volkov?" Adrienne asked.

"Confirmed," Marco replied. "Sergei brought his personal liquidation squad. They aren't here to negotiate, Adrienne. They know Simone generated the encrypted manifests. They're here to take her, extract the master keys, and burn this place to the ground."

Adrienne turned to Simone. He reached out, his hand cupping the back of her neck, pulling her forehead to his lips in a fierce, brief kiss.

"Go to the safe room beneath the wine cellar," he commanded, his voice steady as granite. "The door is four-inch hardened titanium with a biometric lock. Once you're inside, you do not open it for anyone except me or Marco. If someone touches that keypad who isn't us, the bunker automatically seals for seventy-two hours."

"Adrienne, no," she pleaded, her hands grabbing his lapels. "Come with me. The safe room can hold both of us—"

"If I hide in a bunker while they attack my home, they will bring anti-materiel explosives and breach the air vents," he said calmly, looking deep into her eyes. "I don't hide, Simone. I end threats. You trusted me with your life for five years. Trust me for one more hour."

Simone stared at him, seeing the terrifying, glorious certainty in his eyes. She swallowed hard, nodded, and whispered, "Come back to me."

"Always."

He handed her a compact 9mm Glock from the drawer. "You know how to use this?"

"You made me take the tactical firearm certification three years ago," she said, her fingers wrapping expertly around the grip, checking the chamber with practiced muscle memory. "You told me it was for 'corporate insurance compliance.'"

A ghost of a smirk touched Adrienne’s lips. "I lied. I just wanted to make sure my girl could shoot."

Marco grabbed her arm gently. "Move, Simone. Now."

As Simone disappeared down the stone corridor toward the cellar, Adrienne’s smile vanished completely.

He turned toward the bay windows overlooking the front lawn. Through the sleet and the dark, he saw the headlights of three heavy SUVs tearing up the long gravel driveway, their tires kicking up mud and snow.

He keyed his radio. "Team Alpha, Team Bravo. Free fire protocol authorized. No survivors."

The front lawn exploded into violence.

Automatic gunfire ripped through the freezing night air, the staccato bark of high-caliber rifles shattering the silence of the Hudson Valley. Muzzle flashes illuminated the pine trees in grotesque, strobe-lit bursts.

Adrienne stepped out onto the wide stone terrace, the freezing wind whipping his coat around him. He raised his Kimber, his breathing slow, his heart rate dropping into the ice-cold rhythm of a seasoned executioner.

A Russian gunman leaped from the lead SUV, an AK-12 raised toward the manor’s entryway. Adrienne squeezed the trigger twice. Two heavy .45 rounds punched through the man’s tactical vest, dropping him into the wet gravel before his boots fully hit the ground.

The Romano security team, entrenched in the tree line, opened up with crossfire, pinning the second vehicle in a hail of armor-piercing lead. The SUV’s fuel tank ruptured with a deafening *CRACK*, erupting into a towering fireball that illuminated the manor in harsh, demonic orange.

From the third SUV, a hulking figure in a heavy fur-trimmed coat emerged, firing an automatic shotgun toward the terrace. Sergei Volkov.

"Romano!" Volkov roared over the gunfire, his voice thick with a guttural Russian accent. "Give me the girl and the routing codes, and I let you bleed out in your garden! Refuse, and I skin you both alive!"

Adrienne stepped down the stone stairs into the firelit courtyard, entirely unbothered by the bullets ricocheting off the granite balustrade around him.

"You came to the wrong house, Sergei," Adrienne whispered.
