Chương 5 - Whispers at the Docks

The flight back to New York had been conducted in absolute, suffocating silence.

By Thursday morning, a strange, toxic stillness had settled over the sixty-fourth floor of Romano Holdings. The administrative staff walked on eggshells. The vice presidents entering the executive suite took one look at Adrienne’s terrifying, unshaven face and postponed their presentations.

Adrienne sat at his desk, staring at a single manila folder Marco had dropped off at midnight.

It was Daniel Hayes’s complete financial and personal dossier.

Everything about the man was maddeningly, infuriatingly wholesome. Hayes spent his weekends volunteering for Habitat for Humanity. He lived in a sun-drenched loft in Fort Greene. He had taken Simone to dinner seven times in the last two months. He had kissed her on the cheek. He had held her hand in the botanical garden.

He was offering her an exit ramp.

Adrienne knew it as surely as he knew the recoil of his Beretta. Hayes represented everything Adrienne was not: sunlight, safety, a legitimate name, a life where a woman didn't have to check the undercarriage of her car for magnetic explosives before turning the ignition key.

The intercom on his desk buzzed.

"Mr. Romano," Simone’s voice came through the speaker, crisp, cool, utterly disconnected. "Mr. Vance from the Maritime Commission is on line two. And Marco is here to see you."

"Send Marco in," Adrienne said. "Tell Vance I’ll call him back."

The door opened. Marco walked in, his leather jacket wet from the sleet falling over Manhattan. His face was grim, the skin around his eyes drawn tight. He closed the double doors and locked them.

"We have a problem at Red Hook," Marco said without preamble.

Adrienne’s instincts sharpened instantly. "The Castiglione family?"

"Worse. The Bratva. Sergei Volkov made a move on Pier 42 last night. Two of our guards were found in a shipping container with their throats cut. They didn't steal cargo, Adrienne. They took the hard drives from the manifest office."

Adrienne stood up, his chair scraping back. "The manifest office? That’s just routine customs declarations."

"Not this week," Marco said grimly. "Simone was rerouting the European pharmaceutical containers through Pier 42 because of the customs strike in Jersey. The manifest files contained the encrypted shipping routing codes."

A cold, sickening dread poured through Adrienne’s veins.

"Simone generated those routing codes," Adrienne said, his voice dropping into a register of sheer terror. "From her personal security terminal."

"Volkov’s hackers aren't stupid," Marco muttered. "If they trace the encryption signature back to the terminal that created it... they don't find the company server. They find Simone Carter."

Before Adrienne could speak, the glass door to the foyer swung open.

Simone was standing there, holding a tablet, her face pale as parchment. She had her company phone pressed to her ear.

"Adrienne," she said. She didn't say *Mr. Romano*. The urgency in her voice shattered all corporate pretense.

Adrienne moved around the desk in two strides. "What is it?"

"My apartment," she whispered, lowering the phone. "My building super just called. Two men posing as building inspectors forced their way into my unit twenty minutes ago. They tore through my home office. They took my personal backup drives."

Marco swore loudly, reaching for his sidearm.

Adrienne didn't hesitate. He grabbed Simone by the upper arm, pulling her completely inside the office and kicking the heavy mahogany door shut.

"Did they say who they were?" Adrienne demanded, his hands gripping her shoulders, checking her frantically for injuries as if the threat were already in the room.

"No," she breathed, her eyes wide, the reality of the mafia world she had documented on spreadsheets for five years finally crashing through her front door. "Daniel... Daniel was supposed to drop off some architectural prints at my place this morning before work."

Adrienne’s grip tightened, his fingers digging into her wool jacket. "Did he see them?"

"I don't know! I can't reach his phone!"

Adrienne turned to Marco, his eyes blazing with the primal, unhinged fury of an apex predator whose den had been breached.

"Call the strike team," Adrienne ordered, his voice vibrating with lethal violence. "Lock down the building. No one enters or leaves Romano Holdings without biometric verification. Bring Hayes in—use whatever force necessary to secure him, but keep him breathing. And get the armored convoy to the basement garage."

"Where are we going?" Simone asked, her breath coming in ragged gasps, her hand clutching Adrienne’s forearm for support.

Adrienne looked down at her. The mask of the detached, indifferent corporate boss was completely gone, shattered into a thousand pieces. In its place was the Don—ferocious, possessive, and willing to burn the entire eastern seaboard to ash to keep her safe.

"You're coming with me," Adrienne said, pulling her flush against his chest. "To the estate. And you are never leaving my sight again."
