Chapter 9 - The Underworld Ledger

The abandoned customs warehouse beneath the Brooklyn Bridge was a relic of nineteenth-century industrial architecture—massive stone arches, rusted iron beams, and heavy wooden doors sealed shut for decades.

Our convoy rolled silently into the brick courtyard behind the structure, killing their headlights.

“Stay inside the vehicle, Casey,” Dominic instructed, checking his sidearm.

“Not a chance, Mr. Russo,” I said, grabbing my heavy leather bag containing my laptop and tools. “You might know how to clear a room with firearms, but I’m the only one here who can read Marcus's encrypted archival ciphers.”

Dominic let out a sharp sigh of defeat. “Fine. But you stay within arm’s reach of Rocco every second.”

We moved through a rusted side door. Inside, the air was thick with dust and old paper. Flashlights cut sharp beams of white light through the cavernous darkness.

A sudden, sharp click of a safety mechanism echoed from the upper catwalk.

“Drop your weapons!” a harsh voice shouted down from the shadows.

Before I could react, Rocco tackled me behind a heavy mahogany packing crate as gunfire shattered the wooden slats above our heads.

Dominic didn't hesitate. He rolled behind a concrete pillar, drawing his weapon, and returned fire with two rapid, disciplined shots that silenced the sniper.

“Clear!” Rocco barked, pulling me to my feet.

We pushed deeper into the vault until we reached a reinforced steel inner door. Inside was a small office containing a metal safe with its door blown wide open.

Sitting on the steel desk was a thick, leather-bound ledger marked with the golden insignia of the Hamburg-Bremen syndicate.

I stepped forward, opened the heavy cover, and pulled my laptop out of my bag, plugging a high-speed data drive directly into the safe’s digital console.

“Is this it?” Dominic asked, keeping his gun raised.

“This is it,” I whispered. “Every single offshore account, every hidden asset, every co-conspirator from Chicago to Frankfurt. I’m uploading the entire decrypted database straight to federal prosecutors right now.”

A progress bar flashed across my screen: Upload Complete.

I slammed the laptop shut and slipped the drive into my pocket. “It’s over. They don't have a leg left to stand on.”
