Chapter 8 - The Red Hook Confrontation

Two hours later, the salty harbor air stung my face as I stepped out of Dominic’s black town car onto the rain-slicked asphalt of the Red Hook shipping terminal.

Massive container cranes loomed against the dark night sky, and the charred, smoking ruins of Warehouse 4 smoldered a hundred yards away, casting a dull, orange glow over the wet ground.

Dominic stood near the edge of the pier, his dark coat fluttering in the harbor wind. Rocco and four armed security operatives guarded the perimeter.

As I walked across the puddles, Dominic turned to face me. His expression was a dark storm, but his eyes softened when he saw me approach.

“I told you to stay at the campus library, Casey,” Dominic said, shielding me from the biting wind. “This isn't a university lecture hall. This is open war.”

“I’m not hiding in a library while people are burning down your infrastructure because of a translation I exposed,” I replied firmly. I looked toward the charred warehouse doors. “Did they leave anything else?”

“Just the word, and a set of coordinates written in German shorthand,” Dominic said, handing me a soot-stained piece of paper.

I clicked on my penlight. My eyes scanned the handwritten numbers and specialized linguistic markers.

“These aren't random coordinates,” I whispered. “They correspond to an old bonded customs warehouse underneath the Brooklyn Bridge—a property that technically belonged to a defunct import-export firm dissolved back in 1965.”

Dominic leaned in closer. “A stash house.”

“Not just a stash house,” I said. “It’s where Marcus and his Chicago associates stored the physical hard copies of the original postwar shipping ledgers. If we destroy those ledgers, their leverage vanishes. But if they get to them first, they can rebuild the fraudulent asset transfer.”

Dominic stared down at me, a mixture of admiration and fierce protective instinct in his eyes.

“Rocco,” Dominic commanded. “Assemble the transport team. We’re going to Brooklyn.”
