Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs Shut

By Monday morning, the executive suite on the top floor of the Moretti-Russo Shipping Terminal in lower Manhattan felt like a war room.

Gone were the cheap black apron and heavy water carafes. In their place, I wore a crisp charcoal pantsuit, my hair pulled back into a sleek chignon, my Montblanc fountain pen resting securely in my jacket pocket.

Across the wide oak conference table sat Dominic Russo and his head of security, Rocco.

“Marcus is scheduled to arrive in twenty minutes,” Rocco rumbled, displaying security feeds from the lobby. “He thinks he’s coming in to finalize the Hamburg shipping manifests.”

“Let him come,” Dominic said calmly. He looked across the table at me. “You’re certain about the wording?”

“Absolute,” I replied. “Under international maritime arbitration rules, if Marcus drafted the original contract using a fraudulent translation to induce asset forfeiture, he triggered a federal violation under RICO involving wire fraud and interstate extortion. The moment he pushes you to sign that transfer today, he legally binds himself to the conspiracy.”

Ten minutes later, the glass doors chimed, and Marcus Vance stepped into the suite. He looked immaculate in an Italian wool suit, his expression a mask of practiced corporate confidence.

“Good morning, Dominic,” Marcus said smoothly, pausing when he noticed me sitting to Dominic’s right. “I see we’ve hired new administrative staff.”

Dominic leaned back in his leather chair, watching Marcus with hooded, dangerous eyes.

“Miss Miller isn't handling my schedule, Marcus,” Dominic replied softly. “She’s reviewing our international contracts. Specifically, the Hamburg-Bremen Accord of 1948.”

Marcus’s stride faltered. The color drained perceptibly from his cheeks.

“Ah,” Marcus recovered, adjusting his tie. “That old treaty. Have you signed the transfer yet, Dominic? The port authorities in Hamburg are waiting.”

“We were just looking over the indemnity clause,” I said, uncapping my pen with a sharp click. “Specifically, the interpretation of the word Unverjährbar. You translated it as 'perpetually protected' in your summary memo.”

Marcus swallowed hard. “That is the standard corporate translation.”

“It’s a deliberate mistranslation designed to invalidate sovereign immunity and trigger federal forfeiture,” Dominic stated, standing up slowly.

“Dominic, that’s absurd—!” Marcus stammered, stepping backward.

“Rocco,” Dominic commanded softly.

Rocco’s massive hands clamped down on Marcus’s shoulders, shoving him hard into the chair opposite mine.

“You tried to hand my entire empire over to federal prosecutors on a silver platter, Marcus,” Dominic said, leaning over the table. “And you did it using a legal loophole you thought nobody in my circle was educated enough to catch.”

Marcus turned completely white, realizing his multi-million-dollar betrayal had been completely unraveled by a waitress with a fountain pen.
