Chapter 8 - The Second Alarm

Evan was sitting in his corner drawing a massive, intricate skyscraper when his crayon stopped mid-stroke.
His head snapped toward the heavy mahogany door of Meera’s office.
"Mama," Evan whispered, his voice trembling. "The floor is heavy. Someone is walking wrong."
Meera looked up from her desk, her heart skipping a beat. She remembered the night in the basement. She didn't hesitate. She grabbed the heavy solid-brass desk paperweight and pushed Evan behind her heavy oak filing cabinet.
The door handle turned slowly.
Before the intruder could step fully into the room, the door was violently kicked inward from the outside—not by the intruder, but by Roman Black himself, flanked by Viktor and Stefan.
Roman had received an automated proximity alert from the private hallway sensors. He had sprinted up the private stairwell faster than his own bodyguards.

The intruder raised his silenced pistol toward Roman, but Stefan was faster. A single, muffled thud echoed through the room as Stefan’s round caught the intruder in the shoulder, spinning him around and sending his weapon clattering across the hardwood floor.
Viktor pinned the assassin to the floor in a matter of seconds, twisting his arm behind his back with bone-crushing force.
