Chapter 9 - The Final Reckoning

An hour later, the rain began to fall again, turning the muddy earth of the abandoned shipping yards at Pier 14 into a slick, reflective mirror under the bruised gray sky.

Vincent Caldwell stood near the edge of the open concrete dock, surrounded by his last remaining bodyguards, watching the dark waters of Lake Michigan lap sluggishly against the wooden pilings. He knew the game was up. The encrypted microchip had just been uploaded globally by Felix, wiping out his bank accounts, exposing his political puppets, and sending federal arrest warrants to every address he owned.

The headlights of a single black Mercedes cut through the falling rain, stopping ten feet from where Caldwell stood.

Dominic Ashford stepped out alone. He didn't carry a rifle. He didn't bring an army. He walked with the slow, measured stride of an executioner walking to an appointment that was long overdue.

Caldwell turned around, a manic, desperate grin twisting his features. He pulled a compact 9mm pistol from his shoulder holster, pointing it unsteadily at Dominic’s chest.

“You think you won, Ashford?!” Caldwell screamed over the sound of the wind and rain. “I built this city! I made the rules!”

“You built an empire on sand, Vincent,” Dominic replied, stopping five feet away, his hands resting calmly at his sides. “And the tide came in.”

“I’ll take you with me!” Caldwell shrieked, his finger tightening on the trigger.

Before Caldwell could complete the pull, a sharp, deafening crack echoed across the pier.

Marco, positioned on a distant crane platform with a scoped rifle, didn't hesitate. The bullet struck Caldwell’s wrist with brutal precision, shattering bone and sending the pistol spinning out of his hand and clattering across the wet concrete into the dark lake below.

Caldwell screamed, clutching his mangled wrist as blood poured between his fingers, falling to his knees in the mud.

Dominic walked slowly forward, stopping right above him. He looked down at the broken man with absolute, chilling indifference.

“The federal indictments hit the wire ten minutes ago,” Dominic said softly, his voice cutting through the storm. “Your accounts are frozen, your empire is dust, and your men are either in cuffs or running for the state line.”

Caldwell raised his head slowly, his eyes bloodshot and full of venom. “You... you ruined everything...”

May you like

“No, Vincent,” Dominic corrected coldly. “You did that to yourself the moment you thought you could break what didn't belong to you.”

He turned his back on Caldwell as federal marshals poured out from the shadows of the containers, slapping steel cuffs onto the broken syndicate boss and dragging him away toward the waiting cruisers.
