Chapter 7 - The Grain Silo Ambush

Route 9 was a ghost road at midnight, flanked by towering rows of dry autumn corn that hissed like whispers in the wind.

Dominic’s armored suburban crept off the main asphalt onto a gravel service path, its headlights cutting sharp beams through the heavy fog. Ahead stood the rusted hulk of the Route 9 grain silo—a towering, cylindrical monolith of corrugated steel rising into the black sky like an industrial tombstone.

“Perimeter is clean, boss,” Marco whispered over the comms from the lead vehicle. “No life signs on thermal.”

“Stay sharp,” Dominic warned, sliding his matte-black Sig Sauer from its holster and checking the chamber. “Caldwell knew we captured the girl. He expected us to look for the backup key.”

The team moved in a tight, fluid formation, boots crunching silently over gravel and dry stalks. Dominic kicked open the rusted metal side door of the silo, leading the way into the cavernous, echoing interior.

The air inside smelled of moldering grain, damp earth, and something else—a faint, chemical scent that made Dominic’s instincts flare instantly.

“Trap,” Dominic hissed, holding up his fist to signal a halt.

Before Marco could react, a blinding glare of halogen work lights snapped on overhead, flooding the interior with searing white light. From the upper catwalks above, automatic weapon fire erupted in a deafening, thunderous roar.

Bullets chewed through the corrugated steel walls, sending sparks cascading down like golden rain.

“Ambush! Take cover!” Marco shouted, diving behind a massive concrete support base as return fire lit up the gloom.

Dominic rolled behind a stack of rotting wooden pallets, his pistol barking twice in rapid succession, taking out the halogen fixture directly above the primary shooter on the catwalk. The gunman dropped with a muffled curse.

“They were waiting for us!” Felix yelled over the din, pinning down two enforcers trying to flank them from the southern exit.

“They didn't want the key, they wanted me,” Dominic realized aloud, his mind racing with cold calculation.

Caldwell hadn't been defending his assets—he had been running a diversion, baiting Dominic out of the estate while a secondary strike team moved on the Ashford mansion to recapture Elena.

Dominic slammed his fist against the reinforced steel floor.

“Marco! Secure the perimeter, blow through their flank, and get the trucks moving!” Dominic commanded, vaulting over his cover and firing two precise shots that neutralized the remaining gunmen on the upper level. “We’re heading back. Right now.”
