Chapter 9 - A Seat at the Table

Spring came to the shores of Lake Erie three months later.

The ice on the lake broke apart into floating crystal sheets, replaced by deep blue water that sparkled under the April sun.

Lake Haven House had been completely transformed.

The resort was now a bustling, world-class lakeside estate. The staff—no longer living under Celestine’s cruel, cold hierarchy—were paid double their previous wages, offered comprehensive benefits, and enjoyed a brand-new on-site childcare facility built right beside the north garden.

I stood on the wide timber porch of the main house, wearing a simple navy blue dress that fitted comfortably around my soft curves.

Jamie, now over a year old, was walking on unsteady legs across the green lawn, chasing a bright yellow rubber ball. He laughed loudly, his sweet voice echoing through the fresh spring air.

Footsteps sounded on the porch behind me.

Dante walked out, wearing a simple dark blue linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up. He had left his suits and weapons in his private office, looking relaxed and content as he watched Jamie play on the grass.

He walked up beside me, resting his hand on the wooden porch railing.

“He’s getting fast,” Dante noted, a warm smile touching his lips.

“He’s fearless,” I replied, looking up at him. “Just like his father.”

Dante turned his head to look at me. The bright spring sunlight caught the sharp lines of his face, softening his usual formidable presence.

“I spoke with the board this morning,” Dante said casually. “We’re officially opening the Lake Haven Foundation next month. It’s going to provide housing, emergency funds, and childcare assistance for single mothers across Western New York.”

I looked at him, deeply touched. “That’s amazing, Dante.”

“I want you to run it, Penelope,” he said, turning fully toward me.

I blinked in surprise. “Me? Run a foundation?”

“Nobody understands what those women are going through better than you,” Dante said, his voice thick with genuine respect. “You have the strength, the empathy, and the heart for it.”

He stepped closer, closing the small distance between us. He reached out and took my hands in his—his large, warm fingers wrapping securely around mine.

“You don't have to carry the world on your shoulders alone anymore, Penelope,” Dante murmured, looking deeply into my eyes. “Let me share the weight with you.”

My heart beat rapidly in my chest. For months, I had watched this powerful, quiet man protect me, honor my husband’s memory, and cherish my son.

“I’d love to run the foundation, Dante,” I whispered, stepping closer to him. “And I’d love to stay here. With you.”

Dante leaned down, resting his forehead gently against mine. “You’re never leaving, Penelope. This is your home.”
