Chapter 8 - The Revelations

By morning, the snow had stopped, leaving Lake Haven House wrapped in a quiet, brilliant blanket of white.

Dante’s private legal team arrived at the estate by eight o'clock.

We sat in the grand library of the main house. A warm fire crackled in the hearth, and coffee steamed in porcelain cups on the long mahogany table.

A sharp-suited attorney named Vance laid three thick blue folders across the table in front of me.

“Mrs. Fairchild,” Vance said professionally, “over the past seventy-two hours, Mr. Moretti’s investigation successfully uncovered the full extent of the fraud surrounding your late husband’s accident.”

He opened the first folder, revealing official court documents stamped with state seals.

“The contractor’s insurance company had actually approved a two-point-five-million-dollar settlement for Owen’s death two years ago,” Vance explained. “However, Celestine Harcourt’s brother—who worked as a claims manager for the firm—diverted those funds into an offshore account controlled by the Valenti organization.”

I stared at the numbers printed on the page: $2,500,000.00.

Two and a half million dollars.

While I was counting quarters to buy Jamie’s formula, while I was hiding my baby in a cold linen closet so I wouldn't lose a eight-dollar-an-hour cleaning job, two and a half million dollars of my husband’s life insurance had been sitting in a mob bank account.

Tears spilled over my cheeks, hot and heavy.

“They took it all,” I sobbed, resting my elbows on the table and covering my face. “They left us with nothing.”

Dante, sitting beside me, placed his heavy hand on my shoulder.

“They took it,” Dante said softly. “But we took it back.”

Vance pushed a cashier’s check across the mahogany table.

It was made out to Penelope Fairchild in the exact amount of two million, five hundred thousand dollars, fully recovered and cleared by federal authorities.

“The federal grand jury issued indictments an hour ago,” Vance added. “Celestine Harcourt, her brother, and six senior members of the Valenti organization have been arrested for grand larceny, racketeering, and corporate manslaughter.”

I looked at the check, then looked at Dante.

“I don't even know how to thank you, Dante,” I whispered, my voice trembling. “You rebuilt my entire life in twenty-four hours.”

May you like

Dante looked at me, his dark eyes filled with an intense, unyielding warmth.

“I didn't rebuild your life, Penelope,” he said quietly. “I just cleared the road so you could walk forward.”
