Chapter 10 - The Sun on Lake Erie

Six months later, an autumn wedding took place on the manicured lawns of Lake Haven House.
The crisp October air was filled with the scent of fallen leaves, lake breeze, and fresh pine. White linen tables lined the lawn overlooking the deep blue waters of Lake Erie.
Thirty resort staff members—now dear friends—sat in the front rows, wearing their finest clothes, smiling and laughing as music drifted from a string quartet.
I stood at the end of the white aisle, wearing an ivory lace gown that draped gracefully over my full figure. I held a bouquet of dark red roses and yellow autumn leaves.
Beside the floral altar stood Dante.
He wore a tailored black tuxedo, looking impeccably handsome, his dark hair neatly styled, his eyes fixing on me with a love so fierce and undisguised that it took my breath away.
Beside him stood Frankie, holding little Jamie, who was wearing a tiny black bow tie and a matching miniature suit.
I walked down the aisle on steady, confident feet.
I didn't feel small. I didn't feel ashamed of my size, my past, or my struggles. I stood tall, a proud woman who had walked through the cold snow of life and found her way to the warm sun.
When I reached Dante, he stepped forward, took both of my hands in his, and brought them to his lips, kissing my knuckles gently.
“You are breathtaking, Penelope,” he whispered, his voice thick with emotion.
“And you are my home, Dante,” I replied softly.
The minister spoke the ancient words of marriage, surrounded by the quiet rustle of autumn leaves and the gentle lap of lake waves against the shore.
“By the authority vested in me,” the minister smiled, “I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.”
Dante didn't hesitate. He wrapped his strong arms around my waist, pulling my body flush against his, and lifted me slightly as he brought his lips down onto mine in a deep, passionate, and tender kiss.
The crowd erupted into loud cheers and applause.
When Dante finally set me down, Jamie toddled over on his little legs, holding out his favorite yellow flannel blanket.
Dante laughed, reached down with one broad arm, and scooped Jamie up into his air, holding our son securely against his chest while his other arm held me tightly by the waist.

We stood together on the shores of Lake Erie—a family forged in the storm, bound by honor, and warmed by a love that would never grow cold.
The sun broke through the autumn clouds, casting a brilliant golden light across the water, illuminating our path forward into a bright, peaceful future.
