Chapter 57 - The Shattered Dynasty

The silence that returned to Elm Street was heavy, suffocating, and thick with the smell of exhaust and damp earth. The neighborhood had gone dead quiet, the flashing lights disappearing down the avenue toward the highway, leaving only Marcus, Liam, Chloe, and me standing on the lawn.

Liam turned slowly toward me. He looked shattered, a boy standing in the ruins of the illusions he had harbored his entire life.

"Mom..." he began, his voice breaking into a dry sob. He took a hesitant step toward me, his arms slightly raised, as if hoping for the reflexive comfort I had given him every time he scraped his knees as a child.

I took a step back.

Liam stopped dead. His arms fell to his sides, the rejection hitting him harder than any slap across the face ever could.

"Mom, please," Liam begged, the tears flowing freely now. "I... I didn't know. I swear to God, I didn't know about any of this. Arthur... Arthur told me you were trying to cut me out of my inheritance. He showed me documents, legal papers... he made it seem like you were being spiteful because you hated Chloe. I was stupid. I was so arrogant and stupid, but Mom, I’m your son."

From the porch, Chloe crawled to her feet, clutching the doorframe, her face pale and streaked with mascara. "Evelyn... Mrs. Miller... please. We were wrong. I was so wrong. I should never have told you to move out. I should never have touched your things. Please don't take the house away from us. We have nowhere else to go. The baby... she's coming in three weeks."

I looked at Chloe. The arrogant girl who had stood in my kitchen three weeks ago, tapping her French-manicured nails on my granite countertops, telling me that modern families needed their own space and that I should be grateful she was offering to let me stay in a senior living condo.

"You're right, Chloe," I said, my voice completely devoid of warmth. "You were wrong. But being wrong has consequences."

"Mom, you can't kick us out!" Liam cried out, desperation turning his voice shrill. "We don't have enough money for a deposit on an apartment! The credit cards Arthur gave me... they’re all canceled! We have nothing!"

"You have what you earned, Liam," I said coldly. "Which, at the moment, is nothing. You allowed this woman to pack my mother’s china into cardboard boxes and leave them on the curb. You stood by while Arthur Vance tried to strip me of my dignity. You thought because I was old, I was disposable."

"I was blinded!" Liam yelled, dropping to his knees on the damp grass. "I was an idiot! What do you want me to do? Tell me what to do, Mom! I’ll do anything!"

"Get off my lawn," I said.
