Chapter 40 - The Sovereign Hearth

"What is it, Frank?" I asked, a sudden chill knotting in the pit of my stomach.

Frank picked up the tablet, his face darker than I had seen it even during the firefight on the lake. "Arthur Vance wasn't the head of the serpent, Evie. He was just the local asset manager."

"What are you talking about?" David asked, taking a step back toward us. "The board removed him! The funds are frozen!"

"The funds in Bern and New York are frozen, yes," Frank said, his eyes scanning the cascading lines of encrypted data streaming onto the display. "But the Sovereign Charter wasn't drawn against American real estate. It was co-signed in nineteen-eighty-two by a consortium in London—The Crown Trust of Saint Jude."

The tablet chimed with an incoming voice transmission. A cold, cultured British voice filtered through the speaker, crisp and entirely unbothered by the arrests that had just taken place.

"Good evening, Mrs. Miller," the voice said smoothly. "Congratulations on dispatching Arthur. A crude man, honestly. Far too reliant on vulgar American methods."

"Who are you?" I demanded, stepping toward the speaker.

"I am the Senior Trustee of the Saint Jude Consortium," the voice replied with an eerie, polite amusement. "You see, Evelyn, Arthur Vance was merely our foreclosure agent. When you executed the Sovereign Hearth clause this morning in Bern, you didn't dissolve our claim. You triggered the master acceleration covenant."

A sharp ping resonated from David's personal phone. He pulled it out, his face turning instantly pale.

"Mom..." David choked out, showing me the screen.

It was a live security feed from our home in Connecticut.

Parked along our quiet suburban street were four unmarked gray vans. Dozens of men in black tactical gear were moving systematically through my front yard, setting up perimeter surveillance jammers around my porch, my flowerbeds, and the front door.

"The four-bedroom house," the voice over the speaker said softly, the malice dripping from every syllable. "It was never just a piece of real estate, Mrs. Miller. The physical bedrock beneath your basement holds the primary vault terminal for the entire transatlantic gold reserve. Arthur Vance thought he could steal it through your daughter-in-law's greed. But since you refused to sign... our recovery team has just breached your living room."

On the monitor, the front door of my beloved house—the home where I had raised my son, the home I had bled to protect—was kicked violently off its hinges, and heavily armed men flooded into the hallway.

"You have six hours to deliver the master physical ledger to the hearth of your home, Mrs. Miller," the British voice whispered. "Or we will burn your sanctuary, your town, and your bloodline to the ground."

The connection went dead.
