Chapter 12 - The Billionaire's Chessboard

By midnight, Martha Vance was sitting at my kitchen island, surrounded by empty coffee mugs and three different highlighters. Her eyes were red-rimmed, but her jaw was set like granite.
"Julian is a shark," Martha said, tapping the blue-backed document. "He doesn't bluff. Arthur Vance made four hundred million dollars in maritime logistics before he retired to Mayfair. He despised Victoria, but he has an obsessive, dynastic obsession with male heirs. When he found out Harper had a son who was being raised in what he considers 'provincial middle-class obscurity,' he wired Julian a blank retainer."
"He can't take Leo," David said, his voice trembling. He was pacing the kitchen floor, running his hands through his hair. "I’m his father. I have full legal custody. A judge signed off on it!"
"A county judge signed off on an uncontested custody agreement where the mother had no legal representation," Martha corrected gently. "Arthur’s lawyers are going to argue that Harper was coerced, mentally unstable due to postpartum depression, and denied access to her family's trust resources. They’re filing an emergency motion for jurisdiction transfer to Delaware in forty-eight hours."
"What does that mean in plain English, Martha?" I demanded.
"It means if the Delaware court accepts jurisdiction, they can issue an ex parte order requiring Leo to be surrendered to an appointed guardian pending a full hearing. And guess who that guardian will be? Arthur Vance’s private team of nannies, stationed at a private estate in Wilmington."
"Over my dead body," I whispered.
"Don't say that, Evelyn, because Arthur Vance has enough money to buy judges, politicians, and the police force of three counties," Martha said grimly. "We can't fight him with local family law. We have to hit him where it hurts him most: his money and his reputation. Did you know why he left the United States in 2008?"
I frowned, thinking back through all the rumors Victoria used to drop during her drunken garden party boasts. "Victoria always said he was opening the European division."
"He left because the Department of Justice was investigating him for illegal bunkering off the coast of Louisiana," Martha said, leaning in. "He settled out of court, paid a fifty-million-dollar fine, and agreed never to hold an executive role in an American shipping firm again. But the Vance Heritage Trust? It was funded with the proceeds of that exact bunkering scheme."
David stopped pacing. "Are you saying the trust is dirty?"
May you like
"I'm saying," Martha smiled, a dangerous, sharp grin, "that if Arthur Vance tries to use that trust to take your son, he might just hand the federal government the golden key to seize every penny he owns. But we have to prove the chain of custody before Julian Vance walks into that courtroom on Monday morning."
"Then we don't sleep," I said, grabbing my car keys. "David, call your sister. Tell her to come watch Leo. We’re going to Victoria’s storage unit."
