Chapter 38 - Whispers Across the Atlantic

The landing at EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse was conducted under the cover of a freezing alpine fog. The Kensington jet touched down on a private tarmac shielded from the commercial terminals by three massive concrete hangars.

Two black Mercedes G-Wagons with diplomatic plates were waiting by the edge of the apron.

Julian helped me down the airstair into the biting, sub-zero air. I was dressed in a dark wool coat over tactical thermal gear, my father’s signet ring cold against the skin of my right thumb. Arthur remained in the rear cabin, his communications array linked to Julian’s encrypted earpiece.

"We have visual confirmation," Arthur’s voice murmured through the link. "Ward’s transport touched down twenty minutes ago. They’ve already moved her to the Riehen compound. Grace... the biometric clock starts the moment they breach the vault threshold. You have less than forty minutes before Ward forces her onto the plate."

We climbed into the lead G-Wagon. The driver, an elite Swiss operative working under Kensington maritime contract, accelerated smoothly into the misty darkness of the Autobahn.

"Julian," I said as the lights of Basel blurred past the rain-streaked windows, "why are the Kensingtons doing this? Your family could have washed your hands of the Sterlings thirty years ago. Why risk your sovereign charter for an old municipal trust?"

Julian kept his eyes on the road ahead, his hand resting casually near the holstered weapon beneath his coat.

"Because seventy years ago, Grace, your grandfather didn't just create a trust fund," Julian said, his voice dropping into an intimate, reflective cadence. "He saved my grandfather from financial execution after the collapse of the Mediterranean shipping routes. Old Oak Manor wasn't just a house. It was the sanctuary where our families swore an oath that no matter how corrupt the world became, the Blackthorn sovereign reserves would only ever belong to those who protected the vulnerable."

He turned to look at me, the dashboard lights painting his sharp features in amber and shadow. "When Victoria took that podium at your rehearsal dinner, she broke that oath. When you stood your ground in the rain on the runway, you fulfilled it. My family doesn't fight for the money, Grace. We fight for the woman who proved she was worthy of carrying the lineage."

A cold thrill ran down my spine, but there was no time to process the weight of his words.

The G-Wagon banked sharply off the paved road onto a winding gravel track that cut through the dense pine forests bordering Germany. Up ahead, through the mist-shrouded trees, the brutalist concrete silhouette of the Riehen salt works rose against the night sky like a medieval fortress.

"Perimeter reached," the driver whispered in French. "Thermal sensors indicate twelve armed guards on the surface tier. Ward’s executive helicopter is parked on the northern pad."

"We go in through the drainage conduit," Julian commanded, checking the slide on his suppressed pistol. "Grace, stay behind me until we reach the antechamber. Once the door opens, you have fifteen seconds to reach the terminal before the gas vents engage."

I gripped the biometric key in my pocket, my pulse hammering in my ears. "I'm ready."
