Chapter 37 - The Vault of the Black Sun

Six miles beneath the Atlantic, cruising at forty-five thousand feet inside the Kensington corporate flagship—a modified Boeing business jet—Arthur laid out the architectural blueprints of the Basel depository.

The cabin was silent save for the dull roar of the twin turbofans. Julian sat across from me, his laptop linked to the naval reconnaissance satellite tracking Christian Ward’s private transport.

"Christian Ward’s compound is located in the hills outside Riehen, three miles from the German border," Julian explained, tracing a glowing blue vector on the tactical screen. "The depository itself is an underground bunker constructed during the 1970s beneath a decommissioned salt mine. It is entirely off-grid. No satellite uplinks, no wireless networks. The only way in or out is an armored subterranean elevator shaft operated by a manual pneumatic hoist."

"And Victoria?" I asked, looking up at Arthur.

Arthur’s face was grim. "Ward will have her at the secondary vault level by midnight Swiss time. When he forces her to place her palm on the biometric plate, the vault’s fail-safe protocol will trigger. It won't simply lock the doors, Grace. The system is designed to purge the vault with nitrogen gas within ninety seconds of an unauthorized accession attempt."

I stared at him in horror. "You built a death trap for your own family?"

"I built a defense against Christian Ward," Arthur said, his voice heavy with ancient regret. "The protocol was meant to prevent the sovereign capital from being used to finance private armies. I never imagined Gabriel would manipulate Victoria into believing she was the true heir. She thinks she's walking in to claim her fortune. She doesn't know she's walking into an execution chamber."

Julian tapped the screen, zooming in on the compound's perimeter. "Our tactical options are extremely limited. Swiss sovereign territory prevents us from utilizing Kensington defense assets directly without triggering an international diplomatic crisis. We have to go in as private signatories. Grace, you are the only person on earth who can legally enter the facility and override the fail-safe."

"She isn't going in alone," Grandma Rose’s voice came over the speakerphone from Old Oak Manor. "Julian, you will accompany her to the vault threshold. Arthur, you stay in the communications van outside the perimeter. Ward wants you dead; if he sees your face before Grace secures the override, he will detonate the elevator shafts and bury them all alive."

"Understood, Rose," Arthur said quietly. He looked at me, his hazel eyes searching mine for any sign of hesitation. "Grace... you don't have to do this. Victoria tried to destroy you. She showed you no mercy at the altar. You owe her nothing."

I looked out the thick oval window of the jet at the endless carpet of midnight clouds below.

"I’m not doing this for Victoria," I said, my voice steady, carrying the ancestral resolve that had survived three generations of betrayal. "I'm doing this for the name on that ledger. If I leave her to die, I'm no better than the people who tried to steal our home."

Julian looked at me, a subtle, admiring smile touching the corners of his lips. He reached across the table and slid an ivory-handled tactical knife and a secure biometric bypass key into my hand.

"Then let's go pull your sister out of the dark," Julian whispered.
