Chapter 28 - The Architect’s Gambit

The lantern flame flickered, casting long, dancing shadows across the damp stone walls of the icehouse.

"You lied to Vance," I realized, the breath hitching in my chest. "Upstairs in the foyer... you told Vance that Victoria was the original child, and that I was Margaret’s bastard."

"I told Vance what he spent thirty years paying private investigators to hear," Grandma Rose said, her voice dropping to a low, melodic purr. "Gabriel Vance is a narcissist who believes his sister Margaret was an angel betrayed by the Sterlings. If Vance believes you are Margaret’s blood, he won't kill you. He will try to use you as a legal pawn to claim the trust. It bought us time. It kept his men from putting a bullet in your head the moment they crossed that threshold."

"Then who am I, Grandma?" I pleaded, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes. "Who was my mother?"

Rose reached into her dressing gown and pulled out a small, velvet-lined silver locket. She clicked it open. Inside was a miniature black-and-white portrait of a young woman with fierce, intelligent dark eyes, an aristocratic nose, and the exact slight dimple I saw in the mirror every morning when I brushed my teeth.

"Her name was Sarah Vance," Rose said softly. "Gabriel and Margaret’s younger sister. The only honest soul in that wretched family. When Sarah discovered that her brother Gabriel was using federal asset forfeiture funds to launder cartel money through Blackthorn, Gabriel had her committed to a private sanitarium in Montreal."

The horror deepened. "My God..."

"Arthur was in love with Sarah, not Margaret," Rose continued. "Arthur broke Sarah out of that asylum. They had you. But Gabriel tracked them down. To protect you, Arthur made the ultimate sacrifice: he agreed to marry Margaret, adopted Victoria to appease the family trust, and gave you Sarah’s identity under the falsified birth records. Your father didn't run away to Switzerland because he was greedy, Clara. He ran because Gabriel Vance held a gun to his head and threatened to execute you in your crib if he ever contacted you again."

"Then who was that man standing next to Victoria by the burning house?" I gasped. "I saw him with my own eyes! He looked identical to Arthur!"

"That man is Thomas Vance," Rose said with chilling disgust. "Gabriel’s twin brother. A disgraced plastic surgeon who took over Arthur’s legal identity after Arthur died in a Swiss hospice five years ago."

I collapsed back against the cot, my hands clutching my head. The web was so massive, so monstrous, that it defied belief. Victoria wasn't reclaiming an inheritance; she was being used as the public puppet for a syndicate of corrupt federal fixers and Vance family psychopaths who had murdered my real father years ago.

Suddenly, the shortwave radio receiver on the crate crackled with violent static.
