Chapter 27 - The Scars on the Record

Elena raised her right hand and took the oath without hesitation. When she sat down in the witness box, she looked directly across at Daniel Mercer, then turned her eyes to the five-member panel of admirals.

Captain Martinez approached the box. "Lieutenant Alden, for the official record of this tribunal, will you describe the events of June 19th at approximately 0640 hours aboard the USS *Resolute*?"

"We were operating at thirty-two knots during deep-water tactical trials," Elena began, her voice calm, modulated, carrying the weight of unvarnished truth. "I was conducting an inspection of the lower deck cooling lines when the primary steam bypass manifold suffered a catastrophic structural fracture. The ambient temperature in Boiler Room Two rose above four hundred degrees in less than twenty seconds."

She spoke without melodrama, detailing the physical parameters of the catastrophe: the blinding white steam that instantly stripped paint from steel, the scream of escaping high-pressure water, the frantic screams of the junior crew members trapped behind the primary hatch.

"The automated isolation doors had jammed due to thermal distortion of the frame," she continued. "Petty Officer Vane and I engaged the manual mechanical wheel. We had to remain within two feet of the venting rupture to keep the emergency override pinned open so the trapped sailors could crawl through the escape trunk."

"And during that time, Lieutenant, what injuries did you sustain?"

"Second- and third-degree thermal burns across sixty-five percent of my upper back, right shoulder, and cervical spine," Elena said plainly. "My uniform melted into the epidermis. When the final sailor cleared the hatch, Petty Officer Vane lost consciousness from smoke inhalation. I carried him up the vertical ladder to the main deck access corridor."

Captain Martinez turned to the panel. "The defense has entered filings claiming that the wounds on Lieutenant Alden's body were consistent with panic-induced flight—that she was burned while running away from her post."

Admiral Vance leaned forward, her eyes fixing upon Daniel Mercer with terrifying intensity. "The bench has already reviewed the forensic medical scans conducted at Walter Reed under independent oversight. Those burns were sustained while facing the bulkhead override wheel, maintaining continuous pressure against the steam valve."

Vance looked down at Elena. "Lieutenant Alden, did your father or Mr. Mercer ever visit you during your seven months of skin graft surgeries at the burn institute?"

The entire courtroom seemed to stop breathing.

"No, Admiral," Elena answered quietly. "My father sent a courier with a formal request that I accept a voluntary medical discharge and sign an agreement waiving all claims against civilian parts contractors. When I refused to sign the waiver, my security clearance was suspended without an administrative hearing."

In the back row of the gallery, several retired sailors who had served on the *Resolute* stood up simultaneously, their jaws set, their eyes fixed on Elena in silent, unbreakable solidarity.

Admiral Vance stood up from her chair. The other four flag officers on the panel followed her immediately.

"This tribunal has seen enough," Vance announced, her voice ringing off the rafters. "Daniel Mercer, by unanimous concurrence with the federal prosecutors, your bail is revoked. You will be transferred immediately to federal custody to stand trial on seventeen counts of corporate manslaughter, racketeering, and government fraud."

She turned her gaze toward Arthur Alden. "Arthur Alden, your retirement privileges are hereby suspended under Title 10 of the United States Code. You will face a general court-martial for conduct unbecoming an officer, dereliction of duty resulting in loss of life, and treasonous corruption of the procurement system."

Arthur didn't move. He sat motionless, an old man whose empire of deceit had finally crashed down upon his shoulders.
