Chapter 22 - Shadows on the Quarterdeck

The offices of Alden Logistics & Defense Consultation sat thirty floors above the glass-and-steel expanse of downtown Baltimore. For decades, the Alden suite had been regarded as sacred ground within the defense procurement circuit—a place where retired admirals, sitting congressmen, and maritime industrialists shook hands over crystal tumblers of scotch while billions in supply contracts flowed through their fingers.
Today, however, the silence inside the thirty-first-floor executive office was toxic.
Victoria Alden sat on a white leather sofa, her designer coat discarded on the floor, her makeup smudged from hours of weeping. Across from her, Daniel Mercer stood by the panoramic window, his phone pressed against his ear, his knuckles bleached ivory against the casing.
"I don't give a damn what the JAG liaison said!" Daniel hissed into the receiver. "You seal the grand jury subpoena under national security provisions! If those procurement records from the *Resolute* surface, it’s not just Mercer Marine going under—half the congressional oversight sub-committee is on those manifests!"
He slammed the phone down on the mahogany credenza so hard the glass shattered across the corner.
Victoria flinched. "Daniel... my father called me this morning. He sounded... different. He told me to retain independent criminal counsel. He told me that whatever happens with the board, the family name won't protect me from perjury charges."
Daniel spun on her, his eyes wild with malice. "Your father is an old man clinging to the ghost of his four stars! He thinks honor is going to keep him out of a federal penitentiary! If you hadn't pulled that stunt at the gala—if you hadn't ripped Elena’s blouse open in front of Admiral Vance—none of this scrutiny would have landed on us! Vance wouldn't have pulled the audit! The inspector general wouldn't have smelled blood!"
"I did it for you!" Victoria shrieked, standing up, her manicured fingers trembling. "You told me she was snooping around the old files! You told me she was going to ruin the merger! You said if we humiliated her publicly, if we painted her as an unstable, bitter drop-out living off stolen family valor, nobody would believe her claims about the valve failures!"
"Well, it failed, didn't it?" Daniel sneered, his voice dropping to a vicious whisper as he leaned into her face. "Admiral Vance didn't see an unstable sister. She saw a combat-decorated officer whose skin was burned off while your father was trading stock options based on the defective alloy contracts. You gave Vance the casus belli she needed to destroy us both."
The elevator chime echoed through the floor like a death knell. Through the frosted glass double doors, two men in dark trench coats and plain badges emerged, their eyes scanning the reception lobby.
Victoria stepped back, her knees hitting the sofa. "Daniel... who are they?"
May you like
"They aren't Navy," Daniel muttered, his arrogance dissolving into raw terror. "That’s the Department of Justice."
