Chapter 20 - Ashes of the Alden Name

The first public consequences arrived on a Monday morning.
Mercer Safety Solutions announced that it had temporarily withdrawn its equipment proposal while an internal review examined the disputed consultation documentation.
The statement did not admit wrongdoing. It said the company was reviewing its procedures and would cooperate with relevant inquiries.
Daniel's investors reacted immediately.
Some demanded clarification. Others suspended discussions until the review was complete.
By lunchtime, Marin had called Elena eleven times.
Elena answered the twelfth.
“What have you done?” Marin demanded.
“Nothing beyond providing truthful information.”
“Daniel's company is falling apart.”
“The company withdrew its proposal while the documents are reviewed.”
“Because of you!”
“No. Because the company needs to establish whether its submission was accurate.”
Marin's voice broke.
“You always wanted to make me look bad.”
Elena closed her eyes.
“No, Marin. I wanted you to stop treating me like someone you could humiliate without consequences.”
“You ruined the family.”
“The family was already hurting people. We simply stopped pretending it wasn't happening.”
Marin hung up.
That afternoon, Hugh called.
He sounded tired.
“Your sister has been staying with me.”
“I see.”
“She says you won't forgive her.”
“I haven't promised forgiveness to anyone.”
“Is there nothing I can do?”
Elena looked out at the harbor.
“You can stop trying to make us look like a perfect family.”
He was silent.
“Dad, you taught me that integrity matters more than appearances. I need you to live by that now.”
“I will try.”
“Don't promise. Do it.”
After the call, Elena received an update from Commander Bennett.
The company had provided additional records. Investigators were examining the origin of the consultation document and the approval marker. No final determination had been made.
Elena saved the message.
Then she put her phone away and returned to the mentoring application she had started the previous evening.
For the first time in years, she was writing about her experience without apologizing for it.
She described the emergency procedures she had helped coordinate, the technical training she had completed, and the lessons she had learned about risk, accountability, and leadership.
She did not describe herself as a victim.
She did not call herself a hero.
She simply told the truth.
Outside, the sun began to set over the water.
The Alden name had once meant everything to Elena. She had spent years trying to preserve it, even when preserving it required her to remain silent about the way her family treated her.
Now she understood that a family name was not a substitute for character.
Reputation could be damaged by a scandal.
Trust could be destroyed by silence.
But integrity could be rebuilt through consistent actions, even when forgiveness remained uncertain.
Elena saved her application and closed the laptop.
She had no idea what the investigation would ultimately reveal about Daniel's company or the unresolved questions surrounding the Resolute.
She did know that she would not allow those questions to consume the rest of her life.
Tomorrow, she would continue cooperating with the review.
She would continue seeking answers about the fire.
And she would continue building a future that did not depend on her father's approval.
The scars on her back would remain.
So would the memories.
May you like
But neither would define the limits of what she could become.
