Chapter 8 - The Courtroom & Legal Reckoning

The Franklin County Courtroom was packed to capacity on the morning of Tyler’s trial. Reporters from local news stations sat in the press gallery, their notebooks open and cameras flashing outside the double doors.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by Emily on my left and Marcus Vance on my right. My posture was straight, my tailored navy blue wool coat buttoned to the collar. I felt a profound sense of closure settling over my spirit.
Across the aisle sat Tyler at the defense table. He looked small, defeated, and broken, flanked by a tired public defender who looked like she wished she were anywhere else in the world.
When the Honorable Judge Patricia Sterling entered the courtroom, everyone stood in respectful silence.
"State v. Tyler Hayes," Judge Sterling announced, adjusting her spectacles as she reviewed the thick file before her. "The defendant has entered a formal guilty plea to charges of felony reckless endangerment, aggravated assault resulting in bodily injury, and violation of a protective order. Mr. Hayes, do you understand the gravity of these charges?"
Tyler stood slowly, his voice barely a whisper. "Yes, Your Honor."
"In my thirty years on the bench," Judge Sterling said, her voice ringing with cold, authoritative clarity, "I have rarely encountered such a callous disregard for human life and familial trust. To deliberately shove an individual recovering from major orthopedic surgery into a body of water out of sheer financial spite—and to mock their physical agony afterward—is an egregious violation not only of the law, but of basic human decency."
Tyler bowed his head, staring miserably at the polished oak table.
"The state has requested the maximum sentence under the plea agreement," Judge Sterling continued. "Mr. Hayes, I hereby sentence you to three years in the Ohio state correctional facility, with eligibility for parole consideration after eighteen months. Furthermore, you are ordered to pay full restitution for all medical expenses incurred by the victim, Eleanor Hayes, and you are permanently restrained from any contact with her or Emily Vance."
Bang.

The gavel struck the sounding block, sealing his fate.
As courtroom bailiffs stepped forward to snap stainless steel cuffs around Tyler’s wrists and lead him away through the side door, he glanced back once at the gallery. Our eyes met across the courtroom. There was no anger left in my gaze—only a profound, sorrowful peace. He lowered his head and disappeared down the corridor.
