Chapter 6 - The Public Backlash and Social Media Firestorm

It started with a single TikTok video uploaded by one of the wedding guests who had waded into the koi pond to pull me out.

The user, a bridesmaid named Chloe, had filmed the aftermath of the fall: my shivering, soaked dress, the abandoned walker, and Tyler laughing nonchalantly on the stone pathway while dismissing me as "overreacting." Chloe captioned the video: "When the groom pushes his mother into a koi pond because she wouldn't pay for his wedding, and then laughs while she screams in agony with a freshly broken hip."

Within forty-eight hours, the video went viral. It accumulated over twelve million views, spawning stitches, duets, and furious commentary across TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram. Internet sleuths quickly uncovered Tyler’s identity, his employer, his social media profiles, and even his college fraternity records.

The public backlash was swift and merciless. Apex Financial Solutions issued a public statement clarifying that Tyler Hayes had been permanently terminated from his position following an internal ethics investigation, noting that his behavior was "wholly incompatible with the core values of our institution."

For Tyler, who had defined his entire self-worth by his professional title, his designer suits, and his social status, the cancellation was absolute. He couldn't walk down the street without strangers glaring at him or recording him on their phones. He retreated into his motherless, empty apartment, living off takeout deliveries and desperate, unanswered text messages sent to old contacts who had long since blocked his number.

When Marcus Vance, my attorney, brought me the printouts of the viral media coverage during a routine legal update, I felt a strange mixture of sorrow and inevitability.

"Karma has a way of balancing the books, Eleanor," Marcus observed, sipping his tea. "The prosecutor’s office has received thousands of emails from the public demanding maximum sentencing. It’s safe to say Tyler’s defense strategy of claiming it was 'just a joke' isn't going to hold up in front of a judge."

"I don't take joy in his misery, Marcus," I said softly, looking out the window at the falling autumn rain. "I take sorrow in the fact that it took a complete catastrophe for him to finally face the truth. But I cannot save him anymore. He has to walk the path he paved."
