Chapter 2 - The Hospital Ward and Initial Fallout

The sterile white lights of Saint Jude Memorial Hospital buzzed softly above my head, a stark contrast to the sunlit garden where my life had been upended just hours earlier. The emergency room had been a whirlwind of frantic activity: morphine drips, X-rays, computerized tomography scans, and the grim faces of orthopedic surgeons shaking their heads as they reviewed the imaging.
My worst fears had been confirmed. The violent impact and sudden torque of the fall had not only re-fractured the femur around the previous surgical site, but the metal plate had snapped under the stress. Revision surgery was mandatory, and the recovery timeline was no longer measured in weeks, but in many long, grueling months.
As I lay in the post-operative recovery ward, my left leg elevated and encased in a stabilizing brace, the door clicked open. Dr. Harrison, my primary orthopedic surgeon, stepped in, holding my chart.
"You're lucky the bone splinter didn't sever the femoral artery, Eleanor," Dr. Harrison said gently, pulling up a chair beside my bed. "The trauma to that joint was severe. Whoever caused that fall applied significant, targeted force. The hospital social worker had to file an mandatory incident report given the nature of the injury and your post-op history."
My heart clenched. A police report. Tyler’s reckless cruelty had crossed the line from a dysfunctional family squabble into a criminal matter.
Before I could answer, a soft knock sounded at the door. It pushed open to reveal Emily. She wasn't wearing her wedding dress anymore; instead, she wore a simple beige trench coat and jeans, her hair pulled back into a messy bun. She looked exhausted, her eyes rimmed with red, holding a takeaway cup of coffee like a lifeline.
"Eleanor?" Emily whispered, lingering hesitantly in the doorway. "May I... come in?"
I swallowed the lump in my throat and nodded, gesturing weakly to the chair Dr. Harrison had just vacated. "Of course, Emily. Please."
Emily walked over, her lower lip trembling slightly. She set the coffee on the bedside table and sank into the chair, burying her face in her hands for a moment before looking up at me.
"I am so, so sorry," she choked out, tears spilling over again. "I feel sick to my stomach just knowing I was marrying into that... that monster’s family. I called off the entire ceremony immediately after the ambulance left. The guests were refunded, the caterers were sent home, and I packed my bags and left our apartment within the hour."
I reached out, my fingers wrapping gently around her cold hand. "None of this is your fault, Emily. You didn't raise him."
"I thought I knew him," Emily said bitterly, staring down at her bare ring finger where a pale indentation remained. "For two years, he played the devoted, ambitious partner. But when your accountant told him last month that you were scaling back your financial gifts to secure your retirement after your medical bills, his entire demeanor changed. He started calling you cheap. He said you owed him his inheritance early because 'what’s the point of having money if your only son can't throw a luxury wedding?' I defended him back then. God help me, I made excuses for him."
"Greed makes people do ugly things," I sighed, adjusting my pillows with a grimace of pain. "I tried to teach him responsibility, but his father and I perhaps spoiled him too much after the divorce. Whenever he wanted something, he threw a tantrum until he got it. I just drew the line at twenty-five thousand dollars for a four-hour party when I’m facing months of physical therapy."

"Well, he won't be getting a dime from me, either," Emily said fiercely. "And I spoke to the police officers who came to the country club. I gave them my formal statement about what I heard behind the flower arch. Jason tried to text me, claiming Tyler was just venting, but I blocked them both. Tyler is facing real legal trouble, Eleanor. The police classified the incident as felony assault and reckless endangerment given your vulnerable medical state."
A heavy silence settled over the room. Despite everything Tyler had put me through, the maternal instinct—stubborn and deeply ingrained—twitched in my chest. But looking at Emily’s resolute expression, I knew there was no going back. The illusion had shattered, and the wreckage was absolute.
