Chapter 6 - The Allies Emerge

Clara spent the entire day at her office, working with a ferocious, laser-like focus that astonished her department director. By three o’clock, she had finalized the quarterly client presentations, closed two major marketing contracts, and held a strategy meeting with her creative team.

During her lunch break, her phone buzzed against the marble tabletop. It was a text message from an unknown number.

“Clara? This is Sarah, Brandon’s sister. I just got a frantic call from Mom saying you’re kicking her out and filing for divorce. Are you okay? I need to tell you something about what they’ve been planning.”

Clara stared at the screen, her eyebrows rising in surprise. Sarah was Brandon’s younger sister, who lived two cities away and rarely visited because Brenda treated her with the same domineering tyranny she inflicted on everyone else.

Clara immediately dialed her number.

"Sarah? It’s Clara."

"Oh, thank God you answered," Sarah whispered hurriedly on the other end of the line. "Clara, I need you to know I had nothing to do with this. Mom called me crying, saying you went crazy and threw them out, but... but I overheard something last month when Mom visited me."

Clara leaned back in her ergonomic office chair. "What did you overhear, Sarah?"

"Mom and Brandon were talking in my kitchen when they thought I was outside," Sarah said, her voice shaking slightly. "Mom was convincing Brandon that since your apartment was technically acquired before the marriage, they could use a legal loophole involving marital improvement contributions to force a deed transfer into both their names if you ever tried to assert independence. Brandon hesitated, but Mom told him not to worry—she said once you signed a 'refinancing agreement' she brought home from her lawyer friend, your signature would transfer ownership rights directly to her family trust."

Clara’s blood ran cold. Even though she had suspected as much from hearing them outside the guest room door, hearing the detailed confirmation from Sarah’s lips confirmed the sheer scale of the conspiracy. They weren't just interfering in her life; they were executing a calculated property heist.

"Thank you, Sarah," Clara said softly, her voice steady. "That information is... incredibly helpful. My lawyer already has drafts of the fraudulent paperwork they brought home."

"Please be careful, Clara," Sarah warned. "Mom can be vicious when she’s cornered. And Brandon... Brandon has been completely brainwashed by her since we were kids. He doesn't know how to exist without her pulling his strings."

"He won't have to worry about pulling strings much longer," Clara replied. "My lawyer is handling the dissolution. It's over."

When Clara hung up, she felt an immense weight lift from her shoulders. She wasn't fighting alone anymore. Truth had allies, and justice had a paper trail.
