Chapter 3 - The Ultimatum

The silence in the apartment stretched so long that the ticking of the wall clock sounded like heavy boots marching across hardwood.
Brandon slowly reached out, picked up the manila envelope, and pulled out the legal documents. His eyes scanned the pages, moving rapidly back and forth. As comprehension dawned, the color drained entirely from his face.
"You... you actually hired a lawyer?" Brandon whispered, his voice cracking with disbelief. "Clara, you didn't even talk to me about this. You went straight to legal action over a misunderstanding?"
"A misunderstanding?" Brenda shrieked, jumping to her feet with a speed that defied her age. Her face flushed a mottled, furious red. "She’s throwing us out! She’s threatening your home, Brandon, and you’re sitting there whimpering like a dog? Show her who owns this place! Remind her that a husband has rights!"
Brenda took three aggressive strides toward Clara, raising her hand high into the air.
"Watch closely, son," Brenda hissed, her eyes blazing with malice. "Maybe you’ll finally learn how to put a woman in her place."
Brandon stood three feet away.
And did absolutely nothing.
For one frozen second, Clara stared at Brenda’s hand hanging in the air between them. Seven years of marriage, countless insults, endless excuses, and months of swallowing her anger seemed to collapse into that single, crystalline moment.
But she didn’t scream.
She didn’t step backward.
With a speed and precision that shocked them both, Clara reached out and caught Brenda’s wrist mid-air, halting her blow inches from her face.
Brenda’s eyes widened in sheer shock. Nobody had ever dared touch her, let alone block her authority.
Clara tightened her fingers just enough around Brenda’s bony wrist to communicate an absolute, unyielding iron resolve. She leaned in close, looking directly into her mother-in-law’s terrified eyes.
"Try it again," Clara whispered, her voice colder than winter ice.
The room went dead silent. Even Brandon seemed paralyzed, his mouth half-open, staring at his mother's immobilized hand in his wife's grip.
Clara slowly released Brenda’s wrist, stepping back as if touching her had left a foul residue on her skin. She turned her gaze to Brandon, who was still clutching the lawyer's paperwork like a drowning man holding onto driftwood.

"You have forty-eight hours," Clara repeated clearly. "If your mother isn't gone by Friday night, I will have the locks changed and have her belongings placed on the curb by local law enforcement. And Brandon? You are welcome to pack your bags and go with her. Because as of right now, we are done."
Without waiting for an answer, Clara turned on her heel, walked down the hallway, entered the master bedroom, and locked the door behind her.
