Chapter 4 - The Night of Shifting Tides

Inside the bedroom, the world felt different. The air was still and quiet. Clara leaned her back against the solid wood of the door, closing her eyes as a long, shuddering breath escaped her lungs.

Outside in the living room, muffled voices began to rise.

At first, it was Brandon’s voice—panicked, pleading, defensive. Then Brenda’s sharp, piercing tones cut through the wood, full of indignation and outrage. They were arguing. For seven years, they had been a united front against her, two voices singing the same cruel song. Now, faced with real consequences, the cracks in their alliance were splitting wide open.

“What do you mean, you didn’t check the deed?” Brenda snapped through the drywall. “You told me her name was the only one on it, but you said we could force a marital lien!”

“I thought she’d fold!” Brandon shouted back, his voice cracking with panic. “She always folds! Every time we pushed, she gave in! How was I supposed to know she’d go straight to a high-priced matrimonial lawyer?”

“Because you raised a spineless coward of a son!” Brenda snarled. “Now she’s threatening to throw me out on the street! Where am I supposed to go? My niece’s house is full of screaming brats!”

Clara listened with a grim, detached satisfaction. Let them tear each other apart. For years, they had treated her kindness as weakness, her patience as stupidity, and her home as their personal fiefdom. Now, reality was biting back.

She walked over to her closet, pulled down a large suitcase, and laid it across the bed. If Brandon was going to stay here for the next forty-eight hours, she wasn't going to risk sleeping in the same room. She began pulling his clothes off the hangers with swift, efficient movements, tossing shirts, trousers, and sweaters into the bottom of the case.

There was no anger left in her—only the cold, necessary work of excision. A cancer had been growing in her life for years, and tonight, she was performing the surgery.

By midnight, the apartment outside had grown eerily quiet. The shouting had stopped, replaced by the sound of heavy footsteps pacing up and down the hallway. Once, someone knocked softly on her bedroom door.

"Clara?" Brandon’s voice was small, laced with a pathetic, forced gentleness. "Clara, please... let's talk about this rationally. We can cancel the lawyer. Mom can find a small apartment next month. We don't have to blow up our marriage over a misunderstanding."

Clara didn't answer. She sat at her mahogany desk, reviewing the financial audit her lawyer had prepared, tracing the numbers with a highlighter. She didn't make a sound.

After a few minutes, the footsteps retreated.

She smiled faintly to herself. Let them sweat. The clock was ticking, and forty-宁-eight hours would pass faster than they thought.
