Chapter 7 - THE FINANCIAL WEB

The emergency asset freeze hearing took place three days later in a crowded downtown courtroom. Judge Thomas, a no-nonsense magistrate with decades on the bench, peered over his half-moon glasses at Daniel and his high-priced defense attorney, Marcus Sterling.

“Mr. Sterling,” Judge Thomas said, his voice dry as parchment. “Your client is asking to lift the emergency freeze on joint corporate accounts while simultaneously facing allegations of systematic domestic intimidation and prior restraining order violations.”

Sterling adjusted his tie smoothly. “Your Honor, these are baseless allegations cooked up by a disgruntled spouse and her retired police officer father to gain leverage in a routine divorce proceeding. Mr. Mercer is a respected corporate executive whose professional reputation is being unjustly maligned.”

Sarah stood up, buttoning her suit jacket with absolute precision.

“If it please the court,” Sarah said smoothly, walking toward the judge’s bench with a heavy manila folder. “We submit into evidence not only the verified police reports and hospital records from Mr. Mercer’s previous victim, Ms. Melissa Hayes—who is present in the courtroom today and prepared to testify—but also digital forensic logs proving that Mr. Mercer has systematically transferred forty thousand dollars of marital funds into an offshore cryptocurrency wallet over the last forty-eight hours in an attempt to hide assets.”

Sterling blinked, turning sharply to look at Daniel. “Did you—?”

Daniel’s face turned the color of ash. He stared at Sarah in sheer horror.

Judge Thomas flipped open the forensic audit report attached to Sarah’s motion. After a long, agonizing silence, he looked up at Daniel over his glasses.

“Mr. Mercer,” the judge said coldly. “Asset hiding during an active restraining order proceeding is a direct contempt of court. Not only do I uphold the financial freeze, but I am ordering an immediate forensic audit of all your personal and corporate accounts at your own expense. Court adjourned.”
