Chapter 5 - THE ALLY IN THE SHADOWS

While Daniel was melting down at his office, I was sitting in my father’s living room when my phone buzzed with an unknown number.

I hesitated before swiping to answer. “Hello?”

“Is this Claire Bennett?” a soft, hesitant female voice asked on the other end.

“It’s Claire Mercer, but... yes. Who is this?”

“My name is Melissa,” the voice trembled slightly. “Melissa Vance—well, my maiden name was Hayes. A lawyer named Sarah contacted me this morning. She told me... she told me you found my folder.”

My breath caught in my throat. “Melissa. Oh my god. Are you okay?”

“I’m safe now. It took me years to rebuild my life after Daniel,” she whispered, tears audible in her voice. “When Sarah told me you left him and that you were fighting back, I dropped everything. Claire, he’s dangerous. Everyone thinks he’s a charming prince, but behind closed doors, he’s a monster who knows how to manipulate every system in his favor. He almost destroyed me.”

“He tried to hit me the night I found your file,” I said, my voice hardening. “That’s why I left.”

There was a sharp gasp on the other end. “He hit you? He never hit me—not physically, not with closed fists. He pushed me down stairs, he locked me in the basement, he threatened to ruin my family, but he was always smart enough to leave no visible marks where they wouldn't cover easily... until the very end.”

“He won't get away with it this time,” I vowed. “I have his old files, and Sarah is putting together a comprehensive case file.”

“Claire... I want to help,” Melissa said firmly, her tone shifting from frightened to resolute. “I kept his old journals. The ones where he detailed his rules for me, his threats, his financial control. I never turned them in because I was too terrified of his retaliation. But if you’re willing to stand up to him in court, I’ll testify. I’ll stand right beside you.”
