Chapter 4 - THE CORPORATE MASK

Daniel Mercer was a senior vice president at Apex Financial, a sprawling monolith of glass and concrete where presentation was everything. He wore tailored bespoke suits, spoke in measured, soothing tones, and prided himself on being the calmest executive in the room.
At 10:15 AM, two uniformed county sheriff deputies walked past the sleek marble reception desk of Apex Financial and headed straight for the executive glass-walled offices.
Receptionist Chloe barely had time to blink before Deputy Miller flashed his badge. “We’re looking for Daniel Mercer.”
Daniel stepped out of his office, his expression a masterpiece of corporate annoyance. “Can I help you? I’m in the middle of a high-stakes client call—”
“Mr. Mercer,” Deputy Miller interrupted smoothly, handing him a thick packet of legal papers. “You’ve been served with an emergency restraining order, notice of marital asset freeze, and a summons for an emergency hearing. You are legally barred from contacting Claire Mercer by any means effective immediately.”
The color drained from Daniel’s face. The pristine corporate mask cracked down the middle, revealing the panicked, raging tyrant underneath.
“This is a mistake—my wife is unstable, she’s imagining things—” Daniel stammered, stepping forward in a threatening manner that made both deputies instinctively drop their hands near their utility belts.
“Step back, Mr. Mercer,” Deputy Miller warned sharply, his voice carrying across the entire open-plan office floor. Dozens of high-powered executives and analysts froze at their desks, watching the spectacle unfold in stunned silence.
Daniel realized too late how many pairs of eyes were fixed on him. He forced a strained, sickly smile, snatched the papers from the deputy's hand, and hissed, “You’ll be hearing from my lawyer within the hour.”

“Looking forward to it,” Deputy Miller replied dryly, turning on his heel.
Within twenty minutes, office gossip had worked its magic. By noon, Apex Financial’s HR department had received an anonymous tip containing public records of Melissa’s old restraining order—sent securely by Sarah’s office. Daniel was placed on immediate administrative leave pending an internal review.
