Chapter 8 - The Trial Begins

The courtroom of the County Superior Court was packed to capacity. Media outlets from across the state had descended upon the courthouse, sensing the explosive combination of high-society drama, corporate corruption, and domestic violence.
Daniel Vance sat at the defense table, flanked by a high-priced criminal defense attorney whose confident demeanor had begun to fray around the edges after reviewing the prosecution’s evidence packet.
Judge Sarah Henderson—a notoriously strict jurist known for her zero-tolerance stance on violent crime and white-collar corruption—rapped her gavel twice, restoring absolute silence to the gallery.
“State versus Daniel Vance. Are the parties ready?” Judge Henderson asked, peering over her reading glasses at the defense and prosecution tables.
“The State is ready, Your Honor,” replied Assistant District Attorney Thomas Vance (no relation), standing up and buttoning his jacket. He turned and gestured toward the front row of the gallery, where Emily sat upright, flanked by Marcus Vance and Detective Miller. “We intend to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that on the night of September 14th, the defendant, Daniel Vance, committed a premeditated act of domestic terrorism against his pregnant wife, pushing her down twenty-one hardwood stairs after she discovered his ongoing financial embezzlement scheme, resulting in the tragic and total termination of an unborn pregnancy.”
Daniel’s defense attorney stood up immediately. “Objection, Your Honor. The defense maintains that the incident was an unfortunate domestic accident exacerbated by extreme emotional distress and physical disorientation on the part of the victim.”
“Overruled, Counsel,” Judge Henderson said sharply, her gaze boring into Daniel. “Your client’s own voice on the residential security recording captured by the victim tells a very different story. The trial will proceed as scheduled.”
For three grueling days, the prosecution laid out an airtight, devastating case. They presented the forensic banking records showing the systematic draining of joint accounts to fund Margaret’s gambling debts. They presented the medical reports detailing Emily’s severe internal trauma and the loss of the twins.
And finally, on the afternoon of the third day, ADA Vance called his star witness to the stand.

“The State calls Emily Vance.”
A hush fell over the entire courtroom as Emily rose from her seat, walked steadily to the witness stand, placed her hand on the Bible, and swore to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.
